Trapping partners with 4 paws
« on: October 05, 2012, 12:16:42 AM »
How many of you take your dog trapping.I have had my dogs on my lines for 49 years now.The have been a big help on the canine line.I now take my female English Cocker,Tuffy, on my water and land lines. She loves muskrat trapping, open water or on the ice. When checking traps in huts, late season,if she just sniffs a hut and moves on,there is no rat in the trap.If she hangs around and sniffs the hut or starts digging it's a rat catch for sure.I always let her carry a rat back to the truck. She has a soft mouth and does no harm to the fur.She just prances back to the truck head held high.Bill
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

Those canine buddys of ours can be invaluable.   Sometimes it takes some training like avoiding foothold  canine sets but after being caught a few times they wise up... and no harm done.

I breed and hunt Labrador Retreivers here in Maine. For years now when setting up my Coyote lines i bring my alpha Male with me. He will always smell out new set locations for me. I bring him on trap checks also. He has more than once helped me find a critter that was on a drag. My females seem to be usless doing this. Yup, 4 paws are better than 2. just dont leave your lunch in the truck alone with them..

Here are my two partners.  The two legged one is my grandson and is six years old.  The four legged one is my little  border collie female Annie and is six months old.  The coyote was a one time participate.

Thanks,
Trapper Jack
