Short throat 45/70 needs reaming.......maybe to 45/90 ?
« on: December 13, 2012, 07:32:11 AM »
Hello from Georgia,

My 45/70 Handi shoots incredibly well with some deep seated 350gr JSP's over Varget powder but I would like to have the throat a bit deeper for longer bullets as well as having the crimp ring at the end of the brass. I was wondering if anyone has reamed their 70 to a 90 and what results you have had. I would also like to hear thoughts about shooting 70 loads in a 90 chamber. Should I expect any loss of accuracy ? Also for those who shoot a 45/90, does the extra case capacity add anything to the round it terms of performance. I have loaded some very hot 45/70 loads and do not feel that there is no real NEED to go to the larger case, BUT if it opens the throat to new possibilities I may ream it on out. Any thoughts, responses and ideas are greatly appreciated. And don't even try it Richard, I have no need for one of those 45/120 monsters.
Dave

Dave,
Why don't you just get the throat reamed for the heavier bullets and go from there? It's easier to take metal out than put it back in. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

The only need for the longer case was in the black powder days, when the only way to go faster was to use more powder. As you have found, you can make a 45-90 equivalent load in the 45-70 case. The long cigar cartridges do look sexy though........
Were I you, I would throat it, but there may be a difference in the throat for cast bullets as opposed to jacketed, it may be worth asking. It will also be an easy job to do yourself as minimal material needs to be removed (so, be Extra Special careful).

Just rent the 45-120 reamer.  Then sell them puny 45-70 brass to help pay for the new brass and dies. ::)

NO NO NO - don't listen to Jason , he'll have you using those rounds that take 2 men and a boy to load  ;D

Just send Quick a PM and get the " Throater " , I did one of mine that was short and it did wonders for bullets up to 525 grain like the " Piledriver "and even the long RN Lee 450's

I used the throater and now it takes the heavier bullets fine.  But I've got a yen for 45-90 also.  Just a thing about an unusual cartridge, maybe.  Let us know if you go for it.
