New Ruger Single Nine...
« on: December 08, 2012, 01:50:29 PM »
I picked up another Maggie today...  :o ::) (Dont tell momma!)

But the whole action is gritty... The GS had two guns and both where the same. So i took the better of the two and figured I always gotta tinker anyhow...  I got it home and took it all apart...  :o ;D Three times! LOL  ::) ::)

I found lots of sharp edges and machine marks. I polished out the ones that matteres. Smoothed out all the pins and holes and stoned the sear and hammer contacts. All went well until the last re-assembly... I did a rookie mistake... lost the pawl plunger and its spring.
The trigger spring gave me a bit of a problem and must have shot out as I slipped it behind the trigger. Don't ya know Brownells AND Midway are out of stock and the Ruger site is about useless as it dosen't have single six parts...  >:(

SO now its still not great, but I'm hoping allot of it is from the lack of the pawl spring... Seems to me like parts are gauling. But the trigger break is very nice now!

Any one have a idea on getting a plunger and spring?

Not much help for you I am afraid.

I'm surprised I haven't heard of more finish or even function type issues from Ruger. It would appear they are running wide open having sold a record number of guns this year. It would be pretty easy to let QC slip to keep the numbers up.

Get a brite flash light and go crawling around, I sweep around with a good wand magnet at the same time. You might just find a bunch of springs.  ;D

I see the Ruger site carries many parts for their semi's, but no revolver parts. Whats up with that. I have dropped small gun parts before, but have been lucky, and have always been able to find them. The only solution is to keep looking they are there somewhere.

I buy parts for my single action Rugers with a phone call to Ruger.  Get the part # from your owners manual or their website and call them Monday A.M. Easy and simple.

Thank you very much for all the help!!

Most places I tried where out of stock on one or both these parts... I found a small online shop in Texas that has a used spring and plunger for 5$ with free ship. SO, I ordered and it arrived yesterday.

After a stressful day, I had some dinner and went down into the reloading room. (Looking back NOT a good idea) With a clean work area  I pulled it all apart. Let me back up a bit...

This action was more gritty and sluggish as any I have seen. NEVER seen on a Ruger. Heck, Old time cheap revolvers where night and day better than this revolvers action. As I looked at all the parts cont points there was burrs, tool marks and rough areas. I stoned and polished everything that made contact with something else. Much care taken as not to change timing. At the same time I installed a Wolfe spring kit. This took me three full dis/re assemblies to get the trigger passable... Then I lost the spring and plunger.

OK, back to yesterday (Saturday) and with used replacement spring and plunger in hand I begin the process. I have some real difficulty with the three springs... The Hand spring, the Pawl spring and the Trigger spring. All of these are in or held in place with the grip, making assemble challenging. Anyhow, after about a doz tries, I got all springs in place and screws tightened... Only thing is, not the pawl pressed too far forward and is jambing in place... Disassemble shows some suprising results... THE MISSING SPRING!!!! The plunger is gone, but some how the spring was twisted around inside the revolver causing the Pawl to not work properly. Once I found this and removed it, the whole action smoothed out to a point its almost as nice as my 1970's Colt Python!
Now re assembly is a bit easier, but the Pawl seems to be too short and the timing is now off. Im thinking the spring was in there form square one and thinking back to when I first dissambled this gun the plunger and spring that I lose was in backwards... that is to say the plunger was touching the grip frame NOT the Pawl as it should... My thinking is now that this spring was the problem for the start and my removing it allowed the Pawl to operate correctly and had been fit with the spring in place. Now without that spring the pawl moves back and forward farther resulting in the timing problem.

SO It packaged and going back to Ruger for repair... More when it returns, probably early January 2013,

I just got the call for the GS. My Ruger is back and ready to pickup.  ;) ;D No further information was given... I don't expect troubles/problems, but more info when I get it in hand over the weekend... If tomorrow is slow, I may run over Friday afternoon.  ::)

BUT down/away return time was really good!!

Stay tuned.

Fun, fun, fun....the older I get, the harder it is to control springs and roll pins!

LOL I hear that!! I have had over a dozen of these completely appart countless dozens of time doing action and trigger work. This one kicked my arse! Momma even came down to chief some of my more colorful metafors during assembly..  :-[

Well she needed to go to the vitamin store and that's over half way to the GS... SO we picked it up LAST NIGHT!!  ;)

They changed ALL internal parts!!! Apparently I left in a Wolff trigger spring. They replaced it with a stock one but sent it back to me! ;) . The action is still smooth but the trigger is now about 5# instead of 3 like I had it. But I think I'll leave it as is till I shoot it a bit.

15$ charge for shipping and 17 day turn around THRU THE HOLIDAYS!!! HUGE KUDOS to Rugers service department!!
