Contender misfire question.
« on: November 13, 2012, 10:28:24 PM »
I'm just wondering. How many peaple who own a contender have had the old click of the trigger, and nothing happens. Over the years I have had that happen once in awhile. My fear is I will be on a stalk and this will happen when I am squeezing the trigger on my hunt.
I been researching the problem but just wonder if others are having similar problems.
         Thanks

What round are you shooting?  Under sizing can cause this issue with some rounds like the 30-30 or similar rounds because the action will not close completely enough to get a complete hammer strike.

I can't say I have ever had a misfire in the field or at the range with any of my three calibers. .41 .44 and 7-30.

I would say misfires probably come from bad reloads or a problem with the gun such as a weak spring or overly tight chamber.

I would not be comfortable hunting with a gun/load I was not 100% confident in. Shot opportunity sometimes is a long time coming and I don't want to mess up the shot when it finally comes.

Its happend to my 7-30 waters, 375 jdj, 45-70 factory barrels. I purchased a head space dial indicator, and found the brass sits .006 to .009 from being flush on the barrel. My custom barrels sit flush 0 with no miss fires. I my researching the problem I find proper head space is .006 and under. my barrel to frame is .003 with .006 case inside the barrel .009 total head to frame head space and higher. I'm guessing this may be the problem.
