Breech plug lube?
« on: March 02, 2012, 11:18:58 AM »
I just got a new wolf with quick remove breech plug.  What do you use for lub on yours?  I went to
Cabelas yesterday and they had tiny tubs of lub for about $18.

Stop by an auto parts store and buy some anti-seize. I have been using it for several years with never a stuck breechplug.

If thats the new Wolf with the hand removable breech plug " quick release breech plug" No lube is needed, just finger tighten the plug and it will seal up.

Slufoot is right, the best breech plug lube is anti-seize for the majority of the breech plugs out there. I prefer Oatey's pink PTFE Tape because it works well, and is less messy.

However, bigblock455 is correct in this case, the new CVA breech plugs do not need any lube at all. These breech plugs seal so well, that NO blowback gets into the threads. I now use a light coat of quality gun oil on the threads when protecting the rest of the rifle/pistol.

Here is my Optima Pistol Blackhorn 209 breech plug after 3 primers and 21 shots at the first range session. I wish all breech plugs sealed like this. I no longer need the tape, as you can see.

Slufoot and Busta are correct.  I use Permatex Anti-Seize, it can be picked up at any auto supply store, and it's a lot cheaper than any of the "specially made breech plug lubes".

Most any lube will work. It's important to take it out & clean after shooting a bit. I also leave mine out or loose during any storage time. I always clean, dry, & tighten before the next outing.

Teflon plumbers tape. I've tried most everything and this stuff works everything, is inexpensive and clean.
It does not need to be any special color or special "breach plug tape".

You can also get anti-seize in a solid form in what looks like an overgrown Chap-stik.   It is a lot less messy that the semi-liquid style and doesn't migrate to other places ot have a risk of getting any in the chamber.

You just rub it on the threads and install the plug.

Been shooting black powder for 30+ years and have found that simply oiling the threads well and just finger tightening will leave the breachplug easy to remove when needed............. GL

I just wish some of the people who brought their muzzle loaders into the pawn shop would use ANY kind of lube!!  I have seen some real horror stories with some of those guns, we started not taking them if you couldnt easily remove the breech plug so as to see the bore, alot of them looked like sewer pipe 20 yrs. old sewer pipe,  Jim

Slick 50 grease sold at Wally World. Is also a good use for bore butter if you have any laying around.

One tube or tub of Slick50 ONE grease should last a lifetime.  The same is true for Amsoil food grade white grease (the Amsoil might even be a shade better).   I hate using any anti-seize as that crap gets everywhere.    The greases named are easily applied and easy to remove and work great.  The use of the Teflon tape (that use may be my best contribution to the muzzleloader world   ;D ) is also a good alternative.  When I use the tape or when lubing a QRBP I always put just a dab of one of the above greases atop the tape or in the threads.  A little extra added insurance... I don't want to ever deal with a stuck plug again.
