6.5mm Grendel
« on: November 09, 2012, 04:52:08 PM »
Been reading a lot about the 6.5mm Grendel cartridge lately.  I know it was originally designed for the M-4/AR-15 type rifle, but the accuracy and hunting potential of this round has me wondering, how it would do as a Handi chambering.

Has Profino Industries or any other Handi Gunsmith ever made a Handi in this chambering?  Is it possible, by stubbing or rechambering, at a reasonable price?  There was thread discussing the 6.5 Creedmoor as a Handi recently, but the cost was kinda prohibitive for me to even think about it.

What say you?

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

...Oh, and for what it is worth, I don't think a stub or a rebore will be any more or less because of the chambering.

If you want a Creedmoor or a Grendel, price differences will be for who does it and what they use, not which cartridge.

I would like to see input on prices for different methods and sources.

In a cost cutting move, Profino has dropped their  line of bottleneck cartridges. ::)    ;D
Any updates on the the Grendel project for our good friend?

"Profino has dropped their line of bottleneck cartridges".
I understand that is because they discovered that the proprietary Profino cartridge design with the bottleneck at the rear was 'troublesome' to ream.

It will probably be mid to late January before I get my hands on the first-ever 6.5 Grendel Handi rifle (at least I think it's the first 8)). Trust that I will be providing an accurate range report. If it does well, it may replace other Handis like my 30-30 and 7mm-08.

Thanks, Dinny

On a side note, I got my 2 Handi's in 6.5 CMR (Creedmoor rimmed) back from the gunsmith today.

Hopefully I will get to fireform brass tomorrow.

Thanks for the link, don't know how I missed it.  Now I'm going to be eagerly waiting for Dinnys' range report.

OSR,
Given the proven capability of the highly-efficient 6.5 Grendel, it's low recoil and it's accuracy potential, I would bet there's a few Handi hunters here anticipating the results of my project. Hornady just released news of a 123gr SST bullet especially designed for the Grendel. It's going ot be a tough choice between it and the 120gr NBT.

Thanks, Dinny

I might have to try that bullet in my 6.5 Carcano.

Paper patched to make up the difference between the .264 bullet and the Carcano (.268)?

It has been some time since I worked up pretty accurate loads in the old carbine, but I know I used 'std.' 6.5 bullets before (way back in my jacketed bullet days). IIRC the mil-spec ammo was a 160gr. RN and I liked the 140 Sierra(?), but the 129gr, Hornady(?) was splendid too, and my preference.

Update 12-10-12: I dug out my old (25yrs. ago) targets, I got about a 2" group at 100yd  ;D ., prone, with open hunting sights (Williams rear and a bead front) and that 129gr. Hornady at .264 dia.; Id say mine shoots fine! As for now, I should play with it again, but my eyes sure arent what they were then........

Both the Prvi and Norma ammo I have for my Carcano use .264 bullets. I've only loaded the Hornady .268 though and it shoots those the best. The surplus stuff I have measured from .265-.268, I don't think I found 2 the same and I measured about 15. I'd love to have a 6.5 Handi, especially a Carcano.

Why not do a 6.5x55mm Swede?

6.5x55 is close to a .308Win in case size.
6.5 Grendel brass is made from 7.62x39.

If you want one, you probably won't want the other.

If either one was available from the factory that would make it a preferred choice.

Since no 6.5's are available from the factory, everybody gets their choice.

Personally I would prefer the Swede. Lot of good factory ammo out there and a legacy of taking big game longer than Odin's beard. I am amazed how the 6.5 hasn't taken off much in the US. The sectional density of this caliber is simply amazing.

Which leads to, anyone know a gunsmith that can do it for an H&R barrel?

Like I said, everybody gets their choice, but

...if you are looking for factory ammo,
...you might want to look at the options with
....Grendel, Creedmoor, and 260 Remington.

Wayne York does rebores. That's where I would go first. Send him a .22 Hornet or .223 barrel and you'll get back a 6.5x55 eight week later.
