Half-Price Books score
« on: February 20, 2013, 02:15:40 PM »
I found a brand new copy of the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving for 9 bucks. I also found a few westerns on DVD and a traditional archery hunting book but thats info for other forums. ;)  I love that store. If you have one in your area check it out. I found the Ball book in the cook book section.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Got a lot of used book stores around here.  Cook books, loading manuals, guide to outdoor survival, art of home gardening, you name it.  Even picked up some Capstick books for 2 and 3 bucks apiece.  Some of the shops here will trade you books for 2 or 3 to 1 also.  For years I read 2 or 3 books a week so I have plenty of tradin material.

i find a few, but i've learned to watch what i
buy very carefully. sometimes i see items i know
i can get elsewhere new for the same or less.
i also look at all copies if they have several,
one may be less because of a scratch or minor stain.
i've also seen things that can be had for free
by writing or calling the vendor for sale at h.p.b.
for several dollars. i shop there, but with a jaded eye.
i also patronize a local independent store that has
a fairly good selection and they also have a give-away
section of books and such that couldn't be sold or
are dead stock, etc.  you don't have to make a purchase
to get a give-away if you see something you want.
i imagine h.p.b. would explode before they would
give anything away for free.
to me it's like gun stores, i try to shop the
little guy first.

There are no little independant shops around here anymore. Borders moved in and drove them all out. Now Borders is gone and Barnes and Noble seems to have repriced thier stuff accordingly. Everyone tells me to shop online for books and/or buy one of those electronic reader things. I guess I am old fashioned. I like to leaf through the books before I buy them and I actually like to have a real book in my hand while I am reading and not some doo-dad that looks like it was used on Star Trek.

I read about two books a week in the winter months.  Nearly all are on a Kindle, electronic book.  It is much easier on my eyes.  Never thought I'd like one until my wife got me one about two years ago.  Now I love it.  Most books are about half the price of hard copy.  Many classics are free.

The Ball canning book is excellent.  I started canning last year and it helped lots with understanding the process as well as info on canning about anything you'd want to.

even if you have to purchase a new
copy, the ball canning book is a must-have.

Last year was my first year doing any serious canning too. I use the little Ball Blue Book and it was enough to get me started but I wanted to know more. The big book has plenty of stuff I want to try, especially the bbq sauces and mustards. I love that stuff but I need to cut down on the sodium since I was just diagnosed with high blood pressure.
