They're both going to kick.  However, the 20 will kick a little less.  It's pushing usually 3/4 oz as opposed to the 12's 7/8 or 1 oz.  Shooting off a bench will always have more felt recoil.  I will always use a sandbag between my shoulder and the stock when seeing where a gun will throw a slug.  Not to worry, they never kick when you're actually shooting at a deer.  ;)

both will wake ya up. You need to look at a few things a sabot slug weighing the same in both 20 and 12 that will move at the same veloicty will will push back about the same so the weight of the gun means alot. In that case the 12 might kick less. If the pay load in the 20 is less then it starts to kick less. So decide what you want to take deer first with respect to payload then you can determine which gun is needed. A gas operated gun kicks less but I have yet to see one as accurate as a bolt gun . Also most 12 ga guns have a wider but plate to spread out recoil and a wider comb to also spread recoil over more cheek . If you are shooting the super fast sabots you might try backing off some in velosity to a tamer shell.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I use the Rem 23/4 in. Sluggers in my 20 ga. Topper and don't mind the recoil at all. Its pretty accurate even though not rifled barrel too. The deer don't know the difference either!

I've killed four deer in my lifetime, two with a nef 20ga modified and felt like it was all I needed.

Just use a limbsaver slip on pad, it takes a good deal of the recoil away. I use one on my 20ga, works like a charm.

I personally bought the 12 gauge USH and absolutely love it.  In my opinion the kick is not that bad, however, I read an article that talked all about 12 vs 20 gauge slug guns.  They did studies and actually found that a 20 gauge slug will have same if not more power at 200 yards.  They both work fine and like I said, I own the 12 gauge.  Personally, they are both accurate and powerful so either way you will be happy.  The only advantage with the 20 gauge is that it could be lighter than the by a few pounds.  Beyond that, they are both great and can't go wrong.
