Model 70 Ultimate Shadow 7mm-08 Project
« on: September 19, 2012, 12:54:35 PM »
I finished her up.  Bell & Carlson Ultra-Lite stock.  The trigger is at 2.5 and I bedded the recoil lug and rear tang.  The scope is a VX-2 3-9X40 in Talley LW lows.  I know it's just a budget build but I like it.

Swampy:  That's a pretty dang nice build.  I thought you were a Remington fan but none the less, that Winchester is a eye-catcher.

I shoot all brands of firearms and do a lot of tinkering so I can speak first hand when asked questions.  Thanks!

Nice looking rifle ! Good job putting it together.  I have a question if you don't mind, you seem to much prefer Talley rings and bases on your rifles (at least on the ones I've seen) I too use Talleys some of the time but I also use Burris signature zees. My question is, in your opinion are Talleys the superior product ? I am teetering on the brink of abandoning my use of Burris and going strictly to Talley. I think I need a push! Thanks, Ron...

I really like Burris rings and use them when appearence is important to me as on a really nice walnut/blued classic rifle.  The reasons that I mostly use Talleys Light Weights are these.  IMO they are the strongest, lightest, and least complicated rings you can buy.  They are all business, and on a hunting rifle that will see a lot of use that's important.  I was trying to save every ounce I could on this rifle.  If you shop online the Talleys can be pretty inexpensive too since you don't have to buy bases.

nice piece. If you want to shave a few more ounces off swap out that 3x9 for a 2x7 luep. Its all the magnification you need for a 708.

The new VX-2 3-9X40 weighs 10.5 oz due to lead free glass.  That's pretty light.

Thanks for your input Swampman, Talleys are indeed light weight, strong and well manufactured and have the added benefit of being USA made. Ron...

I wish the 2-7X33 was cheaper than the 3-9X40.  I would have went that direction for sure.  Leupold says 9.9 oz for the 2-7X33.  The scale says 10.8 for the new 3-9X40.  Still I agree every oz. counts.

Most places online show them slightly cheaper but i guess not enough to really make a differnce. In the old vary x line there was a bigger price jump between them. Either one is a fine scope though.

It seems to shoot less than MOA with Winchester 140 grain factory ammo but I haven't had a chance to shoot it as much as I'd like.

Can't complain about that!

Well since it's not a Remington 700 ;), please let me know if you decide to part with it. I would enjoy turning it into a .358 Win. :)

Thanks, Dinny
