Ready to order 54 molds for TC need advise
« on: November 23, 2012, 08:09:32 PM »
I am about ready to order some molds for a 54 renegade 1-48 twist. I thought it would be wiser to ask for advise first. My plan was to get a .530 rb mold and an oversized lee 415 gr minnie ball. My reasoning was the minnie would be a hair smaller than the bore and require a little force down, but wouldn't have any issues with the skirt popping out and filling up the shallow rifling. I have heard of some lyman rifle shooters saying the normal minnie isn't accurate, that the oversized one was needed. But I think they have deeper rifling than a renegade. To be honest I would like the minnie to just drop down, but a lot of times cast ones can be finicky about lining up properly if they are not just about bore size. So would like your thoughts on minnies in general out of a TC please.

The next thing is what works well for you in your 1-48 TC? Lets say you don't shoot minnies, you went with a maxi, real or something else. How are they doing for you? I'm not really looking for a deer round. The rb would be plenty and I'm not going to hunt with it at least until next year anyway so I have time to dial in the right load for accuracy and figure the trajectory out. I do a lot of target shooting with bp so the main thing is going to be just what the renegades like in general and I'll have to chase what this particular one favors from there. I use pure lead and 50/50 beeswax/alox mix. Most of my bp guns get shot thousands of times. Looking at used ml I have seen a lot of them where the muzzle end was in really bad shape and the rest of the inside of the barrel looked good. I don't know if they are tearing them up with a rod or trying to load conicals in them and wearing them out. I thought maybe the minnie would be less wear on getting it started and hopefully more accurate in the compromise twist barrel than a regular bullet. This is my first renegade so just guesses, set me straight on it.
Thanks
