We got him a Marlin 336Y 30-30 Win. last year (it has the 12" LOP stock and 16.25" barrel). He's been wanting a bolt action rifle he could use to hunt deer with once he's old enough, might be next year if they pass the bill. He mentioned a 308 Win.. We were at the range last weekend and he shot my Remington 700 Classic 280 Rem. and he liked it. So we were thinking a 7mm-08 Rem., 308 Win., 270 Win. or 280 Rem. would be fine.
We were at a sporting good store tonight. We walked by their guns and they had a Remington model 700 SPS 270 Win. It has a 24 inch barrel, black plastic stock, matte finish with the hinge floor plate magazine (push the little button and the rounds fall out). It was on clearance for $450. I got the clerk as soon as I could and put it on lay away.
He loves it. Now he just has to wait until Christmas. . . . .he doesn't think he can hold out that long. He's a good kid and really helps us out when we need him to. Some times he'll just do things that need to be done without us telling him to. I really hope he enjoys it. A nice little carbine for hunting in thick brush, deep woods, still hunting or doing deer drives and a nice flat shooting bolt action for sitting, watching field an such. He's all set!
