Youth Handi 223
« on: December 03, 2012, 03:08:38 PM »
Looking to order a 223 for my seven year old daughter for Christmas.  Having a hard time trying to decide which model to order.  Really like the laminate ultra varmint but need youth stock.  She wants wood but they don't make a youth wood stock that comes on the 223.  Might rather have an adult stock and longer barrel and have cut down or buy replacement.  Hate these decisions! Any suggestions?

Welcome!
Brownell's has a youth size plain wood stock for $37.

They do not have a laminate youth, but I think they used to :-\ . If you start out with the ultra you could get a plain wood set and let her get a little bigger before you trim the laminate stock, which is much more expensive.  Chances are, if you trim it to fit her now, she will grow out of it in less than 5 years.

The ultra has a heavy barrel and that makes it awkward for a child to get lined up for a shot in the field. Not a problem on the bench...

I figured the bull barrel might manage recoil and make more accurate?  What would be best platform (barrel and length)?  Might just get that and replace with youth stock

Welcome! The 20" Superlight would be a better choice IMO, even the standard barrel will more than likely be a bit much for a 7yr old to handle well, there's no recoil to be concerned with on a 223, less than 4lbs compared to about 7-8lbs for a 30-30.

Is there any way to mount scope on those super light compacts where the rail sits flat on receiver or will it always have overhang?

It will overhang the chamber swell on any barrel if the scope rail is longer than the chamber which is the same length and diameter on all modern H&R rifles, I have several Superlight H&Rs.

Are the camo stocks aftermarket?  Those look nice!

They're factory, listed in the FAQs on the retail parts page.

My son's first rifle was a 223 handi with the standard 22" barrel. He used a shooting stick and a shooting rail in the tree stand to steady. Like quick said, no recoil to worry about. He killed his first deer with it and a friend of mines daughter killed her first with it this year. Note that shot placement is everything, especially with a 223, so have her practice shooting it in hunting positions and not just off of a bench if she is going to hunt with it.
PS: You can usually find stand length rifles used easier than youth models and you can just buy a youth stock set for it. Keep the standard LOP set and put them back on when she grows or anytime you want to use it. It takes less than 5 minutes to swap them...
