Tangfolio Witness Hunter pistol
« on: February 15, 2013, 06:19:19 AM »
Anyone have any experience (good or bad) with this hunting pistol.  I am looking at one in 45 ACP and it looks great but I have zero knowledge of how they perform and what kind of accuracy they get.  Any comments from your experience will be great.

Now that's a pretty nice looking piece.  Called a hunter I could see it in 10mm but 45 would be alright.  It looks like a earlier Sig design that was lauded for its accuracy and reliability.  I see it wears a Bo-Mar type rear sight and has some frame mounting options.

Have you been able to handle or fondle one yet???  If so, how does it feel??

They make the same model in two calibers: the 45 ACP and the 10mm.  I handled the 45ACP and it felt great! I like the sights too.  It seems that it would be a great deer hunting handgun.
I have the Ruger Blackhawk convertible, 45 Colt/45ACP SA revolver and I thought that would be a good thing to keep the calibers the same for cost savings in reloading and bullet casting.

Camba:  that is a good thought for the 45.  If you are into casting, may I recommend the old Lyman 452423 slug, a 238 gn Keith style semi-wadcutter that usually drops out at 240-250 gns, works great (was designed for) the 45 Auto Rim and the 45 Colt, and shoots very accurately to poa from my 45 acp.  I prefer this slug, over 6.7 of Unique or 6.5 of 231 for somewhere between 875- 900'/sec for Whitetail, if they are foolish enough to come within 50 yds.  If you do not cast your own, both Colorado Cast Bullets and Mt. Baldy Cast Bullets cast these slugs.

Thank you for the info.  My Ruger Blackhawk shoots great both, the 45 colt and the 45 acp so the slugs can be toaded in each of the cartridges and shoot great.
Thanks.

I handgun hunt but here we can't use semi auto.I like those pistols myself, but if you are shooting deer size game I would go 10 mm because everyone has always told me no about 45 acp for huntng.

The 10mm is perhaps the best between the two calibers for deer.  I am not sure how available is the 10mm in comparison to the 45acp ammo.  I do like them both though.

I have a buddy that has the 10mm version of this gun and loves it for deer hunting. He buys Underwood ammo if that helps at all.

Camba:  If you want to go the 10mm route I would start reloading for it.  That cartridge can be way too good for most anything you want it for and if ammo sales begin to slip in your area or if 10mm ammo gets hard to find, reloading is the best way to deal with those shortages....

I have seen a youtube video of a person hunting deer and elk with its Glock model 20 in 10mm.  There's no doubt the cartridge is capable and perhaps, have an edge over the 45acp round.  If I go that route, I will definitely have to reload (if I find brass ;) ) for it.

I used to have the Witness Compact (3.5" barrel IIRC) and it shot great.  I have taken white tail, mulies, and a Desert Bighorn sheep with a 5" 1911 in .45ACP with cast bullets, and it worked fine for those, but it was a matter of having to eat and not so much a planned hunt, and these animals in the area I was in were the only species I could get close enough to take with the pistol.  I would have preffered to keep it to 50yds or less, but if you practice enough to place your shots well, the .45 ACP with a good bullet will do the job very well.
