Which Winchester powder?
« on: February 13, 2004, 04:32:25 PM »
Anyone know which powder Winchester uses in their Super X CXP2's?
My Enfield rifle loves those rounds. :-)

I don't know this for fact but have read that most commercially loaded ammo is loaded with a specific powder that is blended especially for them. They don't just buy off the shelf powder for production. This may be a load of crap but I did read it some where.  KN

Red Neck64,  My rifle is chambered for .303 British.  It's the only round Winchester makes in .303 British a Super X with a 180gr Power-Point. They list is at 2460fps and 2418ftlbs at the muzzle.  They shoot real nice groups.  I'd like to try to duplicate these with all Winchester components then fine tune them for my rifle.

KN, Winchester makes their own powders such as 748, 760, and WXR. I'm hoping they use one of these in their Super X.

SeaBass,

Take a factory round apart and weigh the powder charge.  Then look at some Winchester data for that weight bullet and find the powder that gives the velocity you indicated using the same or near same charge as the factory round.  Might be a place to start.  Good-luck...BCB

I believe that Winchesteruses 748 for cartridges in the .303 British class.  You may have to use magnum primers to get the full potential out of this ball powder, but I suggest you start with standard primers.

Steve Redgewell has some .303 loads posted on his site at 303british.com.  You may also be able to find some load data at accuratereloading.com, huntingnut.com or loadyourown.com.

Don't mix the two!

I was just glancing through Ken Water’s Pet Loads books and I noticed that he used W-748 and W-760 powders with the Winchester 180 Power Point bullet.  His second favorite powder was W-760.  He listed 2415 fps with a charge of 45 grains and a note of “Maximum—Do not exceed”  Again, it might be worth a try to take a factory round apart and weigh the powder charge.  Good-luck…BCB

303 brit loads

Thanks BCB and Rick.  The Winchester load data lists two loads that are close to the velocity listed for the Win factory load.

        One is 39.8 grains of 748 w/ 180gr sp @ 2345fps and 46,600psi.        The other is 46.3 grains of 760 w/ 180gr sp @ 2435fps and 46,500psi.

It should be pretty easy to tell which powder (if it's one of these two) they are using once I pull a round apart and weigh the powder.

Looks like I will need to mic the bullet as well.  The only 180gr Power-Point Winchester sells is .308 dia, 303 brit is .311 dia.  One of Hornady's 150gr 303 Brit bullets is .308 dia also!  Doesn't seem like that would be the most accurate set up but who knows?

Winchester and all the ammo manufacturers use powders that are taylored to their specific use. We can't buy the powders. We can get similar CANISTER powders and load to their specs. You will never find (never being extremely unlikely) the same powder an ammo manufacturer uses in a canister powder.
