Handi Question
« on: December 18, 2012, 03:00:19 PM »
Anyone see a Handi with an offset hinge?. I have the chance to get my 45-70 but the one the dealer has is offset. The action mates and locks nice and solid though.

where the 2 sections meet (Trigger housing and barrel) when you close the action you can see those 2 surfaces aren't flush. About 1/16" offset to one side. Know what I mean?
Modified : I got a chance to look at a schematic and saw the part is a Fore end spacer, Plastic. I assume the screws holding it to the fore end are off a bit.

That doesn't sound like anything I would want to shoot.

Now I see what you're saying. It's pretty common for the spacer to be offset a little. You can fix it fairly easily if it bothers you but it's just a cosmetic issue and won't hurt anything as far as the function of the rifle.
If you want it to be perfectly centered just do this...

Take the forearm off, take the two screws out of the spacer and take the spacer off.
Drill out the screw holes and glue in some good hardwood dowels.
Sand the dowels smooth with the end of the forearm.
You should now have a forearm with no screw holes for the spacer.
Hold the spacer up against the forearm and put the forearm back on the gun and tighten it down.
You should now have the foream with spacer back on the gun but no screws holding the spacer to the forearm.
Center the spacer up on the frame and mark the sides of it where it touches the forearm.
Take the forearm and spacer back off the gun.
You should now have marks on the forearm where the spacer meets it when centered on the frame.
Put a drop of super glue on the spacer and put it on the forearm on the marks you made when it was centered on the frame.
Take a center punch and mark the center of the holes in the spacer.
You should now have the spacer located on the forearm so it will be centered on the frame and have two center punch marks.
Using a drill smaller than the two screws drill two pilot holes for the screws... make sure you keep them straight.
You should now have the spacer located properly and two pilot holes drilled in the forearm.
Put the original screws in the pilot holes you drilled in the forearm and tighten them up.
You should now have the spacer located on the forearm in a position that will also be centered on the frame.

That's all there is to it.
