Israel Israeli students are top of the pack in math, ranking seventh worldwide in a recent study.
The report, published by the Jewish state’s Education Ministry, showed Israeli students ranked high in standardized international math tests, and came in first overall when looking at western nations.
The figures, taken from 2011, were compared to numbers from a 2007 study. The results showed Israeli students to have made considerable gains in math, up from ranking 24th internationally just five years ago.
“Our policy is to nurture the traditional values of Israel and to encourage excellence in education for Israeli children,” Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu said in response to the results.
But Education Minister
Gideon Sa'ar cautioned that these figures should not lead to complacency among Israeli pupils.
"The crisis in education is ongoing," he said. "The writing is on the wall. Together we must cope with the reality and change it... It is our obligation to the next generation."
In the Ministry study, Israeli students ranked 13th in science and 18th in reading.
Figures were also looked at according to language. Hebrew-speaking students ranked in the top 10 among all categories, while Arabic-speaking students ranked 22nd in math, 22nd in science, and 25th in reading.
"These statistics emphasize the important role education can play in minimizing social inequalities,” said
Tzipi Livni.
