LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Members of PETA converged on downtown Louisville on Thursday to deliver a message about down products.

They brought in an activist dressed as a half plucked goose and held signs that read plucked alive at Fourth Street.

PETA supporters say that residents should think about buying synthetic products instead of coats, pillows and other products made of down.

“PETA's giant plucked goose is here to remind us...that they are often plucked alive just to produce down products and it has never been easier to find warm and synthetic down products this holiday season," Katie Arth, with PETA, said.

PETA says that they've gone undercover and have found that goose often have their feathers plucked while they are restrained and without pain medication.

PETA says there are other products that can be purchased that are animal friendly.

I think most of what we use is taken from the nests of waterfowl, eider ducks for instance.

Excellent time for an extended protest. Do a little protesting. Go to mardi gras. Protest a little more. Hang out for about a month.

Nothing man has ever created is as warm as the items mother nature has created.  Down, wool, and real fur, are the warmest. 

Try sleeping at 35 to 65 below in a synthetic sleeping bag, ain't going to happen.  With real goose down, takes about 10 minutes to warm the bag up, then it's off to sleep with you.

I wear Beaver or Rabbit fur hats, Goose Down Bibs and Coat, Wool socks and thermals, with beaver or shearling mittens.  I also wear a Columbia Wool Coat with a Goose Down vest over it.  Very warm combination.

The much maligned cotton is a favorite cold weather material of mine because my favorite hunting coat is a canvas ranch coat with a wool blanket liner. The coat breathes, and it stays comfortable when I sweat. But it stops wind, and sheds rain unless it's really pouring. Resists thorns and burrs too.
 
My favorite every day jacket is that cotton CPO jacket I posted here about last week. Really nice because I get a sensation of warmth almost as soon as I put it on.
