My 30-06 handi won't fire '72 Korean Military ball even tho' it dents the center of
the primer fairly well. Move that FTF round into the GEW 98 Parker Hale Mauser
and it fires just fine.

All of my handloads fire just fine in the handi, even those Korean brass that originally fire formed
in the Mauser, were FL resized, trimmed to lenght, and reloaded with same FMJ bullet COAL, Varget,
and a WIN LR primer. No neck crimp on my reloads.

I uniformed the primer pockets with the RCBS die kit, which got rid of the "pinched primer"
condition typical of military brass.

So I can use this brass if I fire it in the Mauser, reload as described, then shoot it in the
handi.

Apparently this ammo was removed    from a belt, as the brass has some contact corrosion
in that pattern. It appears to have a crimped case neck.

It woulb be easy to blame this on the crimp.  Beyond that, I could use your informed
advice. Why won't it fire in the Handi?

Hard primers more than likely in milsurp ammo which is commonly associated with misfires in Handis, after all, they're made to work with SAAMI and ANSI spec ammo as stated in the owner's manual. You can try a Wolff extra power hammer spring and other tips that are found in the FAQs to make it work, but no guarantees, Gendoc even made a titanium firing pin to get his 7.62x39 to work with all ammo.

Per the FAQ, are these WOLFF springs stronger than the factory springs, which have yet to see 500 firings?

http://www.gunsprings.com/index.cfm?page=items&cID=2&mID=27

Is this much work to DIY replace the springs?

I would like the rifle to shoot a wider variety of ammunition.

Yes, Wollf single coil springs are better(noticeably stronger) than factory springs which is what Numrich sells, I've used the Numrich springs before, some even appear to have been used! :-\ All I've been using for several years are Wolff, I buy em in the 5-packs which saves money, I think I'm on my 4th or 5th pack so far, the FAQs trigger info will show you how to replace it, making the slave pin and a hammer wedge make it sooooo much easier to do, a world of difference.  ;)

Korean ball is made specifically for use in the M1 Garand/light machine gun.  Like most military ammo, has hard primers to prevent possible 'slam fires.'

I'm on a curio and relics list non of the guys there will shoot this stuff.  It seems it has a reputation for blowing up M1 Garands.

So perhaps the best thing to do is not soot any more of it..

+1!  I used to shoot a lot of surplus ammo in my Garands and some Korean stuff had a real bad rep.   :-\   Bad enough that I would never use it!   ::)

Wow! My Gewehr 98 Mauser loves it and has fired more than 300 round of this stuff
with no issues.

What were the issues the Garand team surfaced?

You know, I don't remember...  :-[  About the only thing I do remember is thinking how strange it was that the ammo was bad since the So. Korean Army was equipped with Garands, at least early in the Viet Nam war, and I assumed the ammo they used was of the same manufacture.   :-\

But I love my Garands to much to take any chances!   ;D  Naturally my favorite is an H&R.   ;)

My GEW 98 frame was converted to 30-06 when it was rebarrelled after WWII. The 8x57 barrel was tossed long ago.  :(

I wish I had Dad's Garand!

It'll work fine in your Mauser until it doesnt, at least the Mauser has great gas venting.
Anything with a rep for 'blowing up' guns wont get used with me around, especially at the back end of the gun  :o .

I love a handi rifle but comparing a hammer strike from a Handi to a firing pin strike from a Mauser is like comparing apples to oranges. A firing pin strike from a Mauser is like a Sledge hammer. If it won't set the primer off then it will bend the firing pin in the process!
