Loading the 460 with acc. 5744
« on: December 14, 2012, 04:30:23 PM »
I am tring to reload for my new 460 S&W mag. using acc.5744. I would like around 1600 fps out of a 250 xtp and 1400 fps out of a 300 xtp or lead bullet. I tried 36.0 gr. with the 250 xtp and only got 1330 fps and I tried 30.0 gr. with the 300 xtp and only got 1100 fps. I got these loads from several sources but they fell about 300 fps short of advertized fps. I am using 5744 because I really don't want full power loads.

I have some Cast Performance 300gr lead bullets coming and would like to get around 1400 fps out of them.
Is anyone using this acc. 5744 with these bullets at around this fps ?

I also like H110 but all of the manuals I have looked at have these two bullets at full power velocites with H110 and I am leery of reducing the loads too much with this powder.

IMHO 5744 is a good choice for what your tring to do. I did same thing with it in my 500.

I also agree, AVOID light loads with H110/296 powders...

You also might try RE7 some or Trail Boss.

I've had good luck with middle of the road loads for my .460 using IMR4227. It is also my powder choice for full tilt hunting loads with the 300 gr XTP-MAG.

Thanks for the replys.
I got to do some reloading and shooting today with my 460 XVR.
I went to a mag. primer as I had quite a bit of unburned powder at 30 gr. using a standard primer.
I ended up 1300fps. with Acc.5744 and the 300xtp. which should work fine for Ohio whitetail deer out to 100 yards. I think if I want a little more fps I will go to the H110 starting load  (1400 fps.) in Hornady's manual or IMR 4227 which seems to do well for some of the guys on GBO.
I would think this load would get a little more fps. using a 300gr. lead? which I hope to try next.
