Free float the forend, put a good scope on it and shoot the fire out of it.
.308 is the next one I want to get.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

If it comes with a scope rail, bed the rail before mounting a scope.

If the trigger seems rough, dry fire it a few hundred times using your thumb on a gloved hand to catch the hammer before it hits the transfer bar.  Don't oil it first  but wait until it's several times harder to pull the trigger than when you started then flush it out with some gun cleaner solution.  After that the trigger will be much better.

Doc, is that in the stickies?  I am a lil' befuddled with the term free float!  I will look though.  Bed the rail?  Huh?  I prolly know exactly what you guys are talking about but unknown to the terms.

1.Pull the for-end off and put a rubber o-ring on the stud.  Ahhh!
Thanks, Jer

You can't free float a handi but some put a rubber o-ring as a buffer between the forend and the barrel.  Instead, I bedded my forend with jb-weld epoxy to create a consistent contact with the barrel.  I used some clear 5 minute epoxy to bed the ring mounts to the barrel; you don't need to buy Acra-Glass or anything expensive. And congratulations!
Lead me not into temptation but point me to it instead.

I would loctite the scope base and shoot it first before messing around with it.  You might find it shoots good the way it is.

+1 on pulling the scope rail and making sure all the mounting screws dont 'bottom out' (thus really keeping the rail from seating tight & solid), then remounting it all back up. Several (many?) here recommend the 'bedding' of the rail, though I dont do it (only because I havent found a reason to have to with my mild loads, I guess).

Clean the oils out of the barrel before shooting, and to feel the bore with a tight fitting patch. It should slide uniformly downbore, end to end. Take a look at the rifling and crown to ensure it's good.

Clean the oil off the shelf and locking lug before shooting too.

When ready to go, load a cartridge and close the action 'smartly' to lock it up (not soft and gentle like a finely fitted, well broke in English gun).

Expect to shoot perhaps a couple hundred rounds before it really settles in and you are used to it.
Dont shoot too fast; first round consistent accuracy is the most important in a hunting rifle, 2nd. round next. Shoot too fast and shots may 'walk' as the barrel heats.
Dont get in a hurry to clean it.

Have fun!

Picked it up today and that dude is tight!  Very tight!  Is that pretty common?  Can't wait to shoot it after I swab it out.  What should I clean the oil off the shelf and locking lug with gcrank1?
Thanks, Jer

I use laquer thinner on a Q-Tip (they are easy to bend the shaft to reach in, around and under). Anything that will cut the oil and not leave a residue is good just wipe it off with a dry one after the wet and you are GTG.

In the meantime of getting a scope, use the scope plate screws as sights. Pretty fun if I must say, and surpringly accurate ! Congrats on your first Handi purchase !

You can use a "O" ring instead of the glove [to me much easer] placed in the receiver where the hammer hits.

I've had a couple 308 Handi's and they were both good shooters. Just make sure the scope mount is tight and the latch shelf is dry when you start shooting it. Don't worry about Orings and stuff until you see how it shoots for you.
