My new "est" Shorty!! Its a VERSA-PAC!!!
« on: December 12, 2012, 06:57:21 AM »
It's a 16 1/8" Versa-PAC barrel that's been re chambered to 22WMR!

It has a very nice crown, but a bit of a rough chamber as empties are a out 50/50 on clearing the chamber. That's my single complaint and should be a easy fix!

I fit the barrel to one of my PRE SB small firing pin case colors frames. Was pretty easy. Once I checked the hinge pin for true even contact across its entire surface. I filled a couple thousands off the shelf to get inicial latch engagement. The. Went to work with my new diamond stones. MAN do these work nice!! One BIG tip if you use these, DO NOT apply pressure! Let the weight of the work do its thing. You will feel more "bite" pressing down. But all you will do is dislodge the diamonds and ruin your expensive stone. It cuts allot quicker than a whet stone with less pressure. Any how, fitting was 20-30 mins and it was fit just like I like. Lil more the. 50% latch across 100% of the shelf.

Has anyone trid to pull a 22Mag bullet with pliers as is so easy with a 22LR?  Well let me tell you GOOD LUCK!!! I don't like to fire more than a LR in my basement, makes the dogs nervous and I don't like stains on the hard wood floors... ::) but I really wanted to see how well the primers pooped. So I used LR's. WOW. This frame has had a Wolffe extra power spring installed and man I man do she dent a rim fire!! About zero worry of gun related FTF in this gun!!!;)

Sunday I hit the range with my new Simmons scopes and this newest shorty coyote killer!
What a joy these new scopes are! Bullets walked it to target and tiny groups resulted for better sightability and zero parallax!!

The shorty shot well but is wearing a Tasco tactile 4X scope that's about 35 years old! But its exactly want warented for this lil sniper. (Ill be on the look out for a replacement as its warented for this one)
Any how, I shot Dyna points, Hornady 30g Vmax, Winchester PDX and Hornady Critical Defence all into 3/4". Then I tried some Remmy 33g and Fiocchi FMJs. The Remmys are AWEFUL! This is the first Maggie I have own that has not shot them well! BUT the Fiocchi FMJs went almost into the same hole!!  (All at 50 yards) last bullet tried was CCI Game points. These also shot into about 1/2" at 50.

This target has the lower group of Dyna Points and upper group Hornady Vmax .

This is a group of a couple different kinds of ammo. The ragged hole top center of the bull, is both Te Fiocchi and Game points! YES they shoot same POI! This most preferred as this gun is a truck gunfir coyotes and FMJs penetrate skull shots better while a good expanding bullet is preferred for this.

Sorry no pics yet of the gun, maybe later tonight, but I am very happy it appears to e a shooter!!

Sounds great. Can't go wrong with a .22 mag especially with the variety of ammo they are making now. I'm still partial to the "old school" 40 grain cci and winchester loads. I've been meaning to wring out the Hornady v-max 30 grain because I think they would be less likely to pass through, always a consideration when hunting small woodlots and around livestock.

LOL damn iPhone... ::) Re spells words on the fly and if you don't check or aren't observant you say some funny things some times.

Looking for some suggestions on a scope. The parallax in this 30 year old scope I am using is becoming apparent. Other than that, I think this scope is perfect!

Things I need in this scope;

I want short and light.
20mm OBJ works fine.
4x minor fixes 6x max. Small variable OK too.
BUT MUST have parallax set for 50-60 yards. OR be adjustable.
I don't need a Leupold but I don't want garbage either. ;)
For a cost, lets say something under 200$

Any ideas?

Probably the low end of what you're looking for, I just received one of these as a replacement scope on warranty.  I plan to put it on Pardner 20 gauge for turkey but it's tempting to put it on a used Sportster I just picked up.  The adjustment knobs pull out to make adjustments then push in to lock, no caps to unscrew and leave on the shooting bench. ;)

Have you looked at the weaver rimfire 4x28. Usually around $130 or so and it meets your specs

Merry CHRISTmas CW, you have come across the same thing many, if not ALL of us here have found out. Versa Pak barrels with the chambers reamed out to .22 Mag specs shoot far better than the usual .22 LR H&R barrel. Mine is like that as are the others here I have heard about. Have fun with it and now you have to name it....<><....)

LOL. Never thought of naming it!!

Merry CHRISTmas to you to Andy my friend!!

I know you have one as well. Is yours shorty too?  I still need to polish the chamber, hopefully I can have it sending empties I to the next county. I do very much like this on the Rimfires! LMK as I would like to hear more about your Maggie conversion of the Versa!

JE265,
Thank you for the reminder! Yes I do know of this scope. But better yet you have spurred my memory. I'm pretty sure I have a 2-7 Leupy Rimfire scope!!! I had a 4x rimfire special I sold some time back. But pretty sure the 2-7 is still here maybe on a dark shelf in one of the safes...

YRU,
Thank you! I did check your link on the BSA and its a possibility too. Funky bullseye reticule! I DO like the turret adjustments!  Not really needed on this one but nice just the same!

Hope to get a couple pics for you'll... Going for a "walk" after this shift today. We got a cold snap and a warm front coming in over the weekend with some rain forcast. Could be a very good day....

I've got a 6power Leapers scope that was under $100 bucks when I got it and it's small!  Might work well for you!

I am gonna swap the scope to the Leupold 2x7 Rimfire but here it is.

I have added a small laser to the side for closer quick shots  ::)

Here is the muzzle crown.

WOW!!

I found the extractor had some rough surfaces and where not opened up enough to make up for the larger Mag case diameter... I polished the chamber and the ejector. Once I did that the empties will fly a good 12 feet behind the shooter!!

Ben

MORNIN Ben,

Last night i installed the Leupold rimfire special 2x7x28 scope. I had it on another 22 that now wear as a old Aimpoint 5000. So I have two to site in again! ;)

I really liked the Weaver Rimfire scope idea and that reminded me of this Leupold. I haven't shot that gun in some time so figured it was a good candidate for swapping. ;) ( I get FULL caliber from my colimaters!!)

I agree about the old shotgun scopes. I used them many moons ago as they mounted forward enough to mount lo to the barrel yet not be effected by the hammers!

Hopefully I can get a couple hours on the range this weekend. But being this close to Christmas. Momma may have other plans for me. ;)

MERRY CHRISTMAS,

Got to the range brite and early this AM...

My polishing job did the trick!! Empties fly a honest 6-7 feet behind me!!

The Leupold all mounted and ready and boy did it shoot great! I also shot Fiochhi FMJ and Winchester 34g HP's. BOTH SHOT GREAT!!!

The Fiocchi shot into almost one hole at 50 yards!!!

The Winchesters shot very good as well. Just higher as anticipated as its bullet is lighter and faster.

Hey, CW, this was your first try of the Win. Dynapoints, wasnt it? (the 45gr. lead HP c/w copper wash, rated at 1550ishfps) That lower group of them looks pretty tidy. Wadayathink of them?
Also, do you know what the twist is in the Versa barrel?

I did shoot some yes. I dont find my pics...  Well as expected they impacted lo and suprisingly to the right? But they grouped about 1"at 50 yards so entirely useable!

No, I am not sure of the twist... IIRC 22RF is usually 1:16 or so....

In my H&R UV Mag heavy barrel (they called it a 'bull barrel' but its a heavy tapered; bought it anyway) I sight the DynaPoints in about 1/2 to 1" high at 50yd. and the WW SuperX 22 Mag 40gr. goes 1 inch higher so Im good to 'reach on out there'. The DPts chrono'ed 1500fps too and really slap the steel at 50yd.. I like 'em, they basically duplicate my cast bullet loads from the 22 Hornet trials with much less fuss, but it is more expense. No need to cast though! The top loadings dont equal the 22H, of course......no worries, just stalk closer, right?
Typical 22LR twist (and many early Hornets) has for years been the 1:16, though 'somebody' was using 1:14, werent they? Since these Versa barrels have been doing so surprisingly well rechambered Im now curious just what they are in twist and in B/G dimensions.

I wanted to add a pic of the new Leupold scope..

My first H&R Maggie was also a Varmint model with the cinn lam socks and the heavy bull barrel. I sold that to a friend when I bought the 17HMR... I thought it was better... ::) I saw the light and bought a std 22Mag barrel form a member here and fit it to a receiver. I was luck to find that it shot my favorite 50g Federal ammo. With the new Simmons side focus scope, I am able to site them in dead on at 50 yards and use the bottom ''post'' as a zero for 100 yard shooting.

This shortie shoot Winny 34g and Fiocchi 40g FMJ very well!!
