close to getting a new G-2
« on: February 17, 2004, 08:27:46 AM »
i want this for deer hunting and just plain shooting but i must stay with a straight walled case.i live in the shotgun zone here in Michigan and the straight walled  cases are allright?thinking about a 357mag then rechamber to 357 max or just go with a 44 mag.what do you contender shooters think?this would be new to me ,this contender thing and need some input.how is the accuracy with both of these?i am going with a scope rather than open sights

i am also going to get a 45 muzz loader barrel to but down the road some

thanks for any ideas
jeff

i bought a 14" 44mag to hunt across the river in Ohio.(straightwall restricted). still workin on loads that will group at 100. i mounted a simmons 2x6x32 prohunter, around $120.
my other choices would be 357max,375win, and 444marlin.

For those who live in an area restricted to straight wall cases, I have a NIB 375 Win Contender barrel for sale in the classifieds.  It's a real hammer for whitetail.

i gave the 45-70 some thought but i hear the recoil is right up there.how is the recoil of a 45-70 with a hand gun?is it alot more than a 44mag?i would be shooting all hand loads in this gun.i could use  reduced loads.

i hear that these handguns are good to 100yds or so.is that the case?i would need to get into the gun and learn to shoot it.the only hand gun i have now is a Ruger 22rimfire.

ps:how long of barrel should i be thinking about?i see they make them out to 16 inchs long for a hand gun.i would think that the longer the barrel the more fps and the less felt recoil.what do you think?

I'd recommend a 44 Mag too.  Any barrel between 10"-14" will work.  I think 16" barrels are too long for a pistol.  (I use my three 16" barrels as a carbine).  If you handload, I'd recommend loads that equal a "hot" 44 Special load for starters.  Something like 17-18 gr of 2400 with a 240 gr bullet.   A 200 gr JHP works well on deer out of a 44 Mag also.  The 200 gr bullet will give less recoil than a heavier bullet too.

Jeff223,  I had a 14 inch Contender in .357 max that I hunted with.  Like a FOOL I sold it to purchase another gun I wanted but was short on funds.   I am now in the process of getting a new G2.  For a straight walled case the .357 maximum is great.  Any deer within 125 yards was toast.  This cartridge has the energy it needs and very little recoil.  You cant go wrong with the MAX or a .44 mag.

1- 45-70...from 150yd or less...hunt anything on this planet.

2-357Max...for the 10" easy carrying mode...followed closely by .41Mag,.45Colt, and .44Mag.

3-.375Win(poor man's 375JDJ)...newest barrel in my collection but coming on strong...could easily move to #1.

Have to kick in my 2 cents worth.  Took a new 375 Win Bulberry 10" to the range yseterday.  Used 220 HSP 35 grs of RL 7 and first group in a 30 MPH wind at 50 yards was less than an inch.  About forty rounds, all did about the same, tried one set at 100yds but wind had gotten to high to hold steady on the bags. I was amazed at the soft recoil on this one, I was expecting a real kicker.
Can't wait to try this on a big hog, hopefully this month.

Yes, the 375 Win is a straight wall case.  Bullets if 200, 220 and 225 are primarily used in the handgun configuration.  I have shot some 44 mags where felt recoil was heavier.  I was looking for a stainless 375 Win Hunter and could not find one.  A blued Hunter showed up and I bought it.  Two days later a stainless was offered and I bought that one too.  I now have a 375 Win blued Hunter for sale.  E-mail me if interested.
