357 maximum
« on: December 27, 2012, 12:59:54 PM »
I'm contemplating getting a 357 max barrel. I can get a 10 inch factory barrel for a what I consider a fair price. I'm looking for the opinion of 357 max shooters. Is the 10 inch factory barrel a good shooter or would I be better off with 14 inch barrel? I am mainly looking to use it on deer and hogs.

I think it's an excellent 10" barrel cartridge.

My 10" is the most accurate barrel I have. It's great for deer under 100yds. And it's easy to carry and shoot.

I bought the 10 inch Max on the recommendations of several members on the Specialty Pistols forum. The members that hunted with them said it was good to at least 150 yards and the increase in velocity with that case was fairly minimal between the two lengths.

So do you think that the factory barrel is good enough, or would I be better off getting a 357 mag barrel and have it rechambered to the maximum?

The factory barrel is fine.

A number of years ago I spent the day at the range with a factory 10' TC barrel in 357 max.  :o it was a hoot. Shot everything well from 38s to max's. I shot out to 200 meters at gongs & silhouettes. It was a open sight barrel & my eyes were still good back then. It was rare when the gong didn't ring when I shot.  ;) just made me smile  ;D every time I pulled the trigger.
