DO NOT USE E15 GAS
« on: December 20, 2012, 11:27:53 AM »
The EPA has approved this crap even though they know full well that it damages engines, eats up fuel lines and gaskets and nearly every car maker has stated that use of E15 will void their warranty. Not to mention that farmers are cashing in by growing corn year after year and stupidly destroying their land with the chemical fertilizers which make it possible to produce large corn crops but which run off into the watershed to destroy fish and wildlife and ultimately will ruin the soil for any purpose what ever. And we don't need it, oil companies can produce plenty of gasoline to meet demand without the damn gasohol.

Gasoline, besides helping to cool the engine, has a lubricating quality.  the more corn liquor you put in the less mileage you'll get out of that engine.

The EPA is another one of obamas brown-shirt armies that is driving us toward electric cars.
we'll be forced to stay close to home to recharge.  no more going hunting in your truck or motor home, they'll be a thing of the past.

That's not quite true. It is correct for most of the current engine designs but that's about to change. With the new Silverados that are about to hit the streets, with their new engines, they are coming with direct injection AND higher compression ratios that can take advantage of the ethanol in our fuel. They will be the first to be designed for the ethanol including E85. While ethanol has more octane rating, it has fewer BTUs meaning less actual energy per gallon. But thermal dynamics states that the more we compress the fuel, the more energy we can extract from it. Our current extraction for a 2010 engine is only 30% of the available energy from a gallon of gas. I would expect to see maybe another 3-5% increase with the new engines. GM is also the first to come out with the tri-lobe cam engines. All things considered, unless they have issues with the direct injection, these should be some of the best engines on the street. Now if the rest of the truck was worth a crap, they'd really have something. But ya have to give GM the kudos. They didn't fall for the expanded displacement crapola like Ford with the EcoBust. They kept it simple and made it work. Far fewer parts, far less rotating technology, far less computing required, far fewer owners wanting to kill someone over their over priced POS that won't run.

Same deal with B20 diesel. A lot of engines arent made for it, modern engines too. But its mandated in some states like here in the soy belt of the midwest.

Do you reckon that all us folks on fixed incomes can run out and buy a new silverado.
if gas goes to e85, I'll just have to park my truck and car, or pour a quart of oil in every tank full.

a plain jane short cab is about $22,000

prez obummer will do what ever he can
to cut us americans down to size so we
can be like the rest of the world. how
many folks in europe or africa have
multiple vehicles in a family, or where
each family member has one or more
vehicles?
damned arrogant americans

what would cripple the nation worse than
arranging it to where the small percentage
of gainfully employed folks can't reliably
get to a job?

Might be mistaken but I think my 2011 Tundra is rated by Toyota for E85.

If your Toyota is rated as a Flex Fuel engine, then you can run ethanol up to 85% in it. The engine is not designed to take advantage of the characteristics of the alcohol fuel though. It's basically a gasoline engine that via the PCM mapping allows you to run it. But it does not take advantage of the fuel like the newer GM engines. To take advantage of ethanol, you must pump up more compression. Frankly, an engine with 14-15 :1 compression would be close to ideal for ethanol only fuel. The new GM engines are minimum 11:1 with some at 11.5:1.
Kinda reminds me of my old racing days. I had a friend that got into tractor pulling. He built one with a 570 cu in Rotax engine running 16:1 with Hilborn injection. Obviously headers, cam, etc. We were turning 80+ mph tire speeds with it. I remember vividly not thinking one day when I started the thing in the garage with the front doors open. At an idle, the engine probably spits more alcohol out of the headers than it burns. It didn't take long and I couldn't see anything. My eyes were on fire. I did manage to find the kill switch and made it out. He never let me forget that to this day.
