new glock 26 owner
« on: May 25, 2011, 06:35:24 AM »
After years of shooting my friends g17 i decided that i had to have a glock.  I scored more hits with it than i could my colt 1911 and it was just very comfortable in my hand, almost like putting on a glove.  Since i was wanting something smaller for my ccw gun i bought a g26 and i love the feel of it.  i will be shooting it for the first time this afternoon.  I can already tell i need more mags so i can shoot longer without reloading.  even at 10 rounds they are much harder to load than my single stack 1911 mags.
I do have a few questions though.  First off will a pearce finger extension creat any magazine reliability issues due to pressure on the mag?  Second is it ok to use +P ammo in my pistol?  what is a good type of 9mm ammo to use for self defense?    - Steve

I managed to get in 40 rounds today between rain and being busy.  I was suprised at how pleasant it is to shoot.  I figured with its size it would be hard to keep ahold of and even hurt a bit.  I was just shooting at some gatorade bottles i had on hand and did very well for the first time out with it.  best of all not a single problem with reliability.  no big surprise though.  I think it will make for a great ccw gun.

The Pearce 'pinky' extension (the one that doesn't add any rounds) should not cause any issues, it's a very popular item for the 26/27.
I'm not sure what pressure you are talking about, but there should be anything putting pressure on your gun with the extension.

I would love to try the 26. I have a 19 and love it, and I've shot a 27, but didn't like the recoil of the .40 in such a tiny pistol.

Had a reliability problem with a Glock 36 with the +1s. Haven't heard of any problems with them in the mdl 26.

thats the one i was talking about hammerhead.  I wasnt sure if pressure from my little finger would cause a problem but since it wont i will buy a couple of them.  they seem like a great idea for the smaller grip.  you should definitely try the 26 if you get a chance.

I have shot just about all the wonder nines over the years, and long ago settled on the Glock.  I also use a #26, with thousands of reliable rounds thru it, and a #19 that you would call me a liar if I told you how many rounds without cleaning or a jam.  Glock makes a factory 12 round magazine for the 26 that incorporates a finger extension, though I have always been happy with my 10 rounders.  Plus-P 115 and 124 grain hollow-points like the Gold Dot give the best stopping power in the 9mm Luger.

I have both a 17 and a 26 and love them both. Never had a single problem they just go BANG every time. I don't remember the maker of the "pinky" extinctions I have on my 26 mags but I really like them.  They don't add any rounds but give me a better grip. The Glocks will shoot any ammo. I mostly carry 115 gr Hornady XTP or Speer Gold Dot bullets in +P range handloads. I added adjustable sights to mine to get it to hit point of aim for me.

When considering CCW, I think that the G26 is the best semi auto on the market.  Based on a shortened version of the G17 system, it's more reliable than any of the new ultra thin guns.  It can use those stubby magazines or the full size magazines.  It's the only Glock size that can fit into a normal pocket should there be a need to carry that way.
I use the Glock + Extensions and the standard 10 rounder magazines depending upon whether I am pocket carrying or IWB carrying.

thanks for the input so far guys.   i ordered two pearce grip extensions and an extra mag.  that gives me a total of 30 rounds if i choose to carry that much.  Im 5" 11"  and tried to carry it in my front pocket and it was just right so that will be an option for me if i do choose that route.  I see several holsters in my furture to suit many carry options.

Marine-

Something else to point out.  Glocks (at least the 9mm's) will shoot cast bullets safely and accurately, despite the polygonal rifling.  The key is to use a hard bullet, and make sure its sized .001 / .002 over grove diameter.  Some people report chambering difficulties with slightly oversized bullets, but I never had that problem using 115 grain cast round nose bullets in my 19 or 26.  The problem some people ran into when using cast was by using soft, undersized bullets, causing severe leading when the bullets stripped on the rifling.  Subsequent rounds fired with plus-P jacketed rounds caused pressure spikes.

Marine, I'm also 5'11''.  For holsters I use:
pocket holster:  aholster kydex
IWB:  comp-tac MTAC with the 'slide' option - allows you to carry G26 and longer Glocks
OWB:  comp-tac paddle for the G26

One thing to take note of is you can carry one in the chamber and 10 in the magazine so that makes 11 shots for the 26. ;D

I received my extra magazine, grip plug and 2 pearce grip extensions today.  the grip plug pressed right in and should keep out dirt pretty well.  it made the grip more pleasantto look at either way.  The grip extensions took a bit of force to install.  the original floorplate really liked being on the mags.  the feel of the pistol is completely differant now.  i like it even more.  i kept one of the mags stock just to see how i liked them when shooting.  just a comparison thing to see if i actually shoot better with the extensions on.  i wont be able to make it back to the farm till monday to try things out.

Marine,

I also came into a Glock 26 recently on a trade.  It is a 3rd Gen.  CNND sells some +2 finger extensions that only cost about $2 each.  They extend no further than the Pierce finger extensions and fed perfectly.  I also bought some of the aftermarket KSI 15 round mags from CNND.  They cost about $8 each.  They have all worked perfectly, just like my factory mags.

I was also suprized at the minor felt recoil of the 26.  I expected more from such a small pistol.

Have owned my Gen 3 26 for a few months. My son bought a Gen 4 and put Pierce extensions on it. He said they pinched his pinky finger all the time. I put the Glock + extensions on mine and have no problems.
Have added Talon grips, mag release extension and  XS Big Dot sights. Has turned out to be a great shooter for me with the modifications.
It is my main carry gun now.
