Latest Addition: .223 Superlite Stalker Rifle
« on: December 21, 2012, 04:39:18 PM »
Added BC wood and loving it.  At about 5 pounds should be a great all day carry gun.  With the loads I'm loading now, it'll be good for a good variety of game too.  8)

VERY NICE!

Did you have to do anything special to get the weight that low?

The reason I ask is I've handled .223 Superlites with synthetic stocks and they felt quite a bit heavier than 5 lbs. but I could be wrong.

Good luck with her Tack.  Nice rifle.  I'm just finishing one up too on a camo syn stock set.  Alas, I need a scope and the mount should be here in a couple of days.  Brian56 is sending it.  If it keeps pace with our Superlight 7mm-08s and the .243 it'll be another great carry gun.  Those three are shooters, but the '08s seem to be more fussy about their diet for some reason.  I'm getting superb accuracy out of 115 gr. bullets.  Dead nuts on at 300 and minute of garbage can with 140s ??? ???   Something to work out in the Spring.  I wish they made more calibers available in the Superlights.

Its a beauty Tack... But the 223 dosen't light my fires...

But the 6x45/6x47 sure does!!  ;)   A while back a friend  had a 6x47 Contender and loaded it allot! Was a GREAT shooter and offered some damn respectable ballistics too! I still have some 85g Partitions from those days!!! It sure was a great shooter! I am sure yours is too Timmy!!

Ah crap, I was hoping I was wrong. If it was 5 lbs. even with BC stocks I'd be ordering one right now. 5lbs-12oz is nice but my 357 Max is close to that at 6 lbs. even.

Well I got a 223 I've never shot so I guess it's not my caliber either.  But I sure hope yours shoots as good as it looks though.  I agree the BC wood does make these alot more Handi, to carry and just look at.  Nice.

Yah, I didn't actually put it on a scale, that's why I said about 5 pounds.  hehe  It's a good bit lighter than with my .45 Colt barrel and that's just over 6 pounds.  I am really gonna like it.  Since the Michigan DNR responded to me that I can use the downloaded .223 or any other centerfire for small game, that's what it will be used for primarily.  I wanted a very consistent .22 cal that I can download and my loads for this are running 1340 fps with a 45 gr. Winchester HP.  Out of the bull barrel, it was grouping about 1/2" at 50 yards.  We'll see how the superlite does.  ;)

If you get a chance throw it on the scale, I'm curious. It's a very cool small game gun that's cheap to reload for.

"...BUT, for some of the multi-purpose guns (at least for the kind of shooting/hunting we do)... we often have a hard and soft load... for example... when we are hunting coyotes with our .223's, we generally use 68 gr BTHP's... but we often are also hunting/seeing grouse and hares... so we always carry a dozen or so Hornady 55 gr V-Max (cheap bulk) loaded subsonic with 4.0 gr Trail Boss... we got a couple dozen hares in November (little suckers glowed white, with no snow on the ground!  ;D ) thanks to this combo... for the subsonic we aim "two dots down" on the Mil-Dot scopes and that gets us dead on at 25 yards."

I copied the above from Pete's "Something I don't understand" thread... try the load... it works great for us and the sub loads are one hole (rabbit eye) at 25 yards.

Got to shoot her today and it did pretty good.  I'm going to have to make up some more of my low power loads as I was down to only four and just wanted to test it.  Hopefully, once I can get it on paper for real groups it'll be pretty decent.  Shot a 1" off hand 3 shot group, but it would have been less than .25" except I either jerked, or the old heat from shooting 4 too quick got to it.  We'll see shortly as I'm going to go to my buds place and see if I can get a coyote with it.  8)

I really like it and would be tempted to do the same (oh.....I did; on my 22 Mag UV, but no open sights there). The factory ought to make the BC-Carbine wood available as an option for all the std./short barreled calibers, along with open sights (but then ours wouldnt be quite so 'custom', would they  ;D ).

Finally getting over the flu and Christmas.  Got the .223 SL together and sighted her in.  The 3-9x40 came off the standard contour I parted out.  Just a few clicks and she was dialed in.  I shot 52 gr. Hornady BTHPs over 25.8 gr. RL15 for a conservative 3157 fps.  I sighted it in at 35 yards which should be about dead on at 250.  I rang the 300 yard gong with one shot, but it's not dialed in for that.  There's too much snow between here and there to finish up, so we'll see  :'(   I'll know better when I can get out there.
