22 savage hi power
« on: August 28, 2011, 05:37:52 AM »
Talk to me about a savage 22 hi power cartridge.Does anyone have any experience with this caliber?I wonder if this caliber could be loaded with a lighter bullet than the 70 gr stuff from S&B,say a 45-55 Gr hornady varmint express,to make this caliber really cook. What would be nice is to be able to compare with a 22-250 or 22 swift. The reason I'm thinking on this is because there are combo guns in 12/22HP available and I might like to get one if the 22HP can be "tuned up".

I too would like a 22Hipower. But it takes a bullet of slightly larger diamiter than the other 22 centerfires. .228 compaired to .224 for other 22 centerfires. I don't think lighter bullets are available in .228.  ;)

I know a guy that has a drilling in hipower. Uses it phesant hunting in the Dakotas. He likes the Hipower for the long shot at coyotes he encounters. He claims it works about like a 223rem.  ;)

The hi-power doesn't take the standard .22 caliber bullets(.224).  It takes a .228/.227 bullet so it will limit your bullet choice to only a few.  Hornady makes a 70gr bullet to fit but other than that I'm not aware of another U.S. maker having any bullets available.  Norma makes a 71gr factory loading, the European name is the 5.6 x 52 R.  Thats the only factory load I know of and I'm sure it won't be cheap.  The savage hi-power was billed as a big game cartridge so if you find bullets for it most will be around 70 grains.  If you want something different this would be a good round but it won't be a very friendly like other 22 caliber rounds.

As a interesting note, When I was a kid we would have visiting missionaries come to the church I grew up in. They always had a display table and the ones from africe & india would have animal skins as part of the display. One fellow that ministered in India had killed several tigers and even put his rifle on the display table... :o  something you could never do now days, Anyway it was a savage 99 in 22 Hi-power. And he claimed it was a great tiger rifle.  ;)

Flaflash,

Were you looking for a savage 2400 in 12/222? Or a Valmet in a simular combo? You could not find one I guess.  :o  Just as a thought hot rodding combo guns may not be the best idea. I believe you shared that you had already blown one up. And even if they hold together, you will accelerate the wear.  ;)

Would a savage 24 in 20/223 work? They are easier to find I would think.

yeah I'm still on the hunt to swap/sell my 2400 12/308 and come up with a 222/12 and thought the 22HP maybe the answer but -oh well
as a matter of fact I already have a 20/222 and a 12/223 and ps reminding me of the GREAT EXPERIMENT won't get you any brownie points
BUT the next experiment may involve a 12 O/U barrel with a rifle insert

flash, Not trying to bring up any sore points but don't repeat a bad decision. If you want a hot rod gun( 22 hi-power) @ higher velocity, then I'd recomend you choose a stronger platform than a combo gun.  ;)  Making a mistake is OK but learn from it.... ::)

hillbil,

In India they hunt from a tree stand so he shot the tigers at night from high up in a tree with a light, the british called them torches. But yes marksmanship must be excelent.  ;)

Regards,

You are exactly right, i have a combo gun in 12ga. 22 hi power, and i wouldn't try to hot rod it that way.  Even though i have swage dies so i can make lighter 22 hipower bullets, i'm still not going to do it.

I have a double rifle in 5.6x52R for one barrel. I have successfully loaded 224 vmax's in it and have found accuracy to be very good. The 70 gr. Hornady can be used on medium game if your shot placement is right on.

Here is a link to anyone interested in lighter bullets for the 22 hi-power.  Go to page two and look at the .227 and .228 bullets.
