Older Huntsman Questions
« on: February 04, 2013, 02:43:03 PM »
I picked up an older Huntsman today that I don't think has ever been fired.  The serial number starts with AL, so it appears it is a 1973 model.  It is mint and I am happy, I think.  It is a 58 caliber, 28" barrel with the simple small adjustable rear sight and metal front sight.  It has the push in/out breech plug.  I took the breech plug out and cleaned everything and all I found was a little bit of very light rust - no fouling of any type.  The case coloring is still great as is the wood and all bluing.

First question - the two O rings seem to be good, but where can I find replacements for the future?  I see that Numrich has some, but which model/caliber they fit is not clear.  Do they tend to wear out?

What is the twist rate?  I found some information that indicates 1-66, is that correct?  Any good round ball/patch load recommendations?

The ram rod is the original collapsable one and it really does not want to stay open and locked.  Are there any replacements/better ones available?  Are there any tricks to making the original one stay locked open when needed?

I am aware of hang fire concerns, but is there anything else that I should know?

Thanks in advance for your information.

Bruce

There is much discussion on all your ?'s right here on this forum feel free to do some reading lots of good information here. Congrats on your new purchase. I am not much for round balls but all minnies shoot very well. Starting load info is in the manual. I have had no issues with the o rings. The .58 is 1-66 the .45 is 1-56 . Kurt

Thanks for the info fellas.  So Kurt, the O rings don't tend to wear out?  I was not sure  the minnies would shoot to well w/ the 1-66 twist and shallow looking rifiling.

I haven't had any problems with mine I got them on a couple of plugs .I may of put new o rings in mine just for because but the white plastic or teflon one has never been changed. Any o ring that fits is ok it doesn't really need to come from H&R. My .58's really only get shot 10 or so times each yr to make sure all is still good with them but mostly I shoot my .45's the most.
