« on: January 12, 2013, 09:55:52 AM »
Hey i recently just purchased a used barrel. I was wanting to take scope off and replace with factory sights. I can now git 2 of the 4 screws out. Tried oiling and letting it set for a few days still nothing. Any one ever had this trouble? If so what did you do to git them out? thanks alot for your repleys.

It happens, might be rust or crude in the threads, might be thread lock, etc.   This works the best with the barrel in a vise (obvious protection applied to barrel block/barrel).   Try a perfect fit hollow ground driver, with one hand put pressure on it counterclockwise to unscrew and give the end of the driver handle a sharp smack with a wood mallet, etc.    Best to use the hand you have the best control with on the driver so it doesn't slip and damage the slot/sights.   Usually all it takes to get it started.   Could try heat, but I never had any I couldn't get loose with a whack or two.

A 50/50 mixture of acetone and transmission fluid makes a pretty effective penetrating oil.  That, and the application of heat from a heat gun, should yield some results.  I'd let the penetrating oil sit on those screws overnight before trying them.

Some people use blue and red loctite on sight/scope mounting screws in error, both can require heat to remove small screws, a soldering iron, micro-torch, heatgun, even a bic lighter will soften the thread locker and allow removal. Blue loctite is made for fasteners  over ¼" diameter, the proper loctite for small screws up to ¼" is purple, been using it instead of the blue and have had no problems with removing them or having them loosen up over time.  ;)

Wow Quick, you know everything. I didn't even know there was a "purple lock tite". And here I have been using my bottle of red for 25 years.

I have always used Ladobe's method to remove. I only apply the loktite on the base screws though.  ;)

Larry's method is the best way with a little heat .They should come right out .

I have never used loctite on any base ,it really is not needed .

While I've had red, blue and purple Loktite forever for various uses, I only used blue at first many years ago, later purple on firearms "IF" I use any at all.   Even with all the handcannons I've owned I didn't use it all that often, mostly just on some scope/sight bases.    A properly fitted screw properly tightened doesn't need thread lock even on a cannon.   It was a RPITA on a used Contender barrel bought that had small screws like filler screws installed where somebody had got slap happy with "permanent" red Loktite, sometimes even on small cal or rimfire barrels.   Bunged/stripped screws were also pretty common - some folks spend a lot of money for firearms but won't spend a little more and buy proper tools for them.   A little education goes a long ways.
