went to the range this afternoon while waiting to pick my daughter up from her friend's house. well she got done sooner than i was thinking so i went and picked her up.
two days ago we had gone hunting and had watched what looked like a small buck standing behind some brush and it just wouldnt give us a shot opportunity. since it was still early enough i asked her if she wanted to go see if we can get another shot at it this evening. she said ok so we high tailed it to the place and got on the stand about 4:20. we sat, and sat, and sat... it started getting dark and i heard that familiar sound coming through the woods, that wasnt a squirrel. i told her to focus across the food plot at the wood line. sure enough about 5 minutes later out walks a deer. i told her to raise her gun and get ready. she was watching it move towards us and asked when she could shoot. her gun is zero'd at 100, which is about the length of the food plot so i told her to shoot when she got a shot she was comfortable with.
she is shooting an H&R Topper in 30-30, using my handloads of Benchmark powder under a 150 grain Remington Core Lokt bullet. she dialed the 2-7 Nikon Prostaff up, found her mark and squeezed the trigger. dropped in its tracks. it was facing us, head down, and the bullet entered just to the left side of the spine, taking out both lungs on its way though. we used the range finder after we got to the deer and shot back to the stand... 99 yards!
i have a happy girl and a good bit of meat hanging getting ready for the grinder tomorrow morning. i am a proud papa!

never mind our fancy roof on the side by side. lol

thats two shots, two kills for her and this little rifle. she got her first one with this same rifle and factory Remington managed recoil ammo last year.
