.22 LR precision at 100 yrds
« on: January 27, 2013, 10:36:22 AM »
My Marlin Model 60 makes 5/8" groups at 50 yrds, but at 100 yrds the best it can do is 4".
Does anybody have data for the H&R .22 LR at 100 yrds?  I'm considering buying one if it can top the MM 60.
Thanks.

Doesnt matter a whit what someone else's has done, only what you and yours can do.
The potential for 22 LR accuracy has been definitively worked out quite some time ago. For starters you need a decently bored, reamed and rifled barrel on that solid platform with a very good trigger. Typical sporters will have typical 'field chambers' (and shoot typical non-exceptional groups), not 'match chambers' and you need at least a tight field chamber and preferably match chamber AND the best ammo that the gun likes. Then there is the shooter........some days I seem to be not better than a 3" shooter at 100 and it can be frustrating, so I pull out my trusted Martini International MkIII with 20X scope that is a proven commodity; if I 'miss' its me not the gun (bench, of course, that rig is about 14#). And speaking of bench, it is an art and science all itself.
So, do you have a good heavy solid bench?
What do you use for bags and where?
What do you sit on?
Can you assume the exact same position with the gun on the bags each time?
Can you assume the exact same position for yourself each time
And this, where a lot of guys mess up, can you put that buttstock into your shoulder exactly the same each time?
Do the above with yours, testing ammo until you find one it likes, then buy all of that LOT # you can afford. FWIW, there is wide variation in capabilitie of 22 ammo and it is not unusual to find some that shoots well at 50 and falls apart before 100.
Then start learning about light conditions, mirage and wind effects.

If you're getting 5/8's inch groups at 50 yds, and then the groups are opening that badly at 100, you either have a sight problem or an ammo problem. Neither or which is going to be fixed by buying another rifle.

Agreed!  I'd be quite happy with a 2inch .22LR group at a 100yds, myself!

The 5/8in group at 50yds ...... Is that with or without an optic?

In addition to the advice above, try a couple brands of good quality target ammo, such as Federal Gold Medal.  It is more consistent then typical bulk ammo, and since it starts out sub-sonic, there is less disturbance to the bullets flight compared to a HV round going sub-sonic while in flight.  No wind, a good scope without parallax, good bench technique, etc. are also required.

Thank you to all for all your input.

5/8" at 50 yrds was done with a 4x scope using Remington Target ammo which is the one I have and proven to work the action of my rifle.  i will try other brands and types as suggested, but 22lr are very scarce around here, so it will have to wait until this situation ameliorates.

In any case, I'm still very interested to know how well the HR can do at 100 yrds.

Standard velocity ammo sometimes does not turn out the best groups in semi-auto action rimfires.  Pick up a few different boxes of hi-velocity ammo and test.

It also takes a calm wind to get a good 100 yd group out of a .22.  That bullet is in the air a long time to get there and every little puff will play havoc with it.  I took a .22 rf on a prairie dog shoot that would riddle a coke can at 150 yds at home but I had a lot of misses at 75 yds in the WY wind.  I finally gave up and went back to the .223s.

I well remember watching 22LR std vel 'trails' to 200yd. thru my 20X at a windy match. The hyperbolic parabola of the bullet was amazing to observe and to finally see it land center of mass on 3 of 5 of my rams was ever so satisfying.
To save you'all from looking it up;  a hyperbolic parabola is the compound curves on a 'Pringle' potato chip.

As strange as it seems the standard velocity 22 holds up better at long range in the wind than the faster stuff. That's the reason the majority of 22 bpcr shooters use the standard velocity target rounds , so the hit percentage on the rams at 200 meters is better.

Hoping for some warmer/less windy weather to get my new Savage MKII-FV-SR that i picked up yesterday out to the range for some 100+ yard shooting, will probably put 100 rounds through it at 25-50 yards before going farther to break it in a bit. Have a bushnell legend 5x-15x with a/o mounted on it but it is -10 and blowing pretty hard today so it will have to wait for another day. I hope it likes the federal gold medal target 40 grainer's that so many of my other .22's have shot so well over the years. It was the best performer in my anschutz model 190 target, ruger 10/22 and my other savage .22 rifle. I buy these rounds by the brick when ever I can find them due to how well they have worked for me in so many different guns. The standard CCI 40 grainers have worked almost aswell for me

I can do much better with my H&R than with my semis...but it's probably because I can shoot any ammo without worrying about cycling the bolt.  With most bulk ammo I can get about 1.5 moa at a hundred, if the wind isn't moving the target too much.
