SRH 454 difficult extraction
« on: October 22, 2012, 02:37:07 PM »
Picked up a used 454 Alaskan, really like the feel of it and thought it would compliment my 7.5" 454 very well.  Took it home loaded it up with 45 colts and fired them off, three shots on the money, three shots to the left.  Opened it up to reload and it would not move with a lot of force they finally extracted.  Repeated the process with the same results so packed it up and called it a day. Thought it probable needed a good cleaning as it is a used gun.  While working on it I decided to try loading the cylinder with live rounds, three dropped right in, three hung up before seating.  Removed the rounds and looked down the cylinder chambers from the business end, in three of the chambers I could see a sliver of the ejector star, the other three were clean.  Thinking I need to send this back to Ruger for repair. Anyone ever heard of this?

Do that test again, but coat the cases at the back with dychem (sp?) or at least black Magic Marker. If they are being hung up or torqued on extraction it bare spots should show just where.
If it turns out that 'sliver' showing is the culprit I would first try gently dressing down that inner sharp edge with a stone.

Update,
I took the gun back to Cabelas and they offered to give me back my money or send it in to Ruger.  I decided to have them send it in since I really like the feel and handling of this gun and they are hard to find.  Cabelas called and the gun was back ready for pick up.  Ruger replaced the cylinder and extractor, looks great, no binding when loading rounds.  I have not had an opportunity to shoot it yet, hope to soon.  A tip of the hat to Cabelas and Ruger for great customer service.
