Newbie questions
« on: February 16, 2013, 06:07:54 AM »
I have never coyote hunted, but due to the rising deer numbers in my area, they are increasing in number.  My questions are how much you can get for the pelt, where you sell them and what do you do with the carcass after skinning it?

Here in West TX the pelts are worthless due to weather......you may find a rancher willing to give you $5.00 a ear.  Rarely sink one.  Carcas is buried or buzzard bait (follow the wishes of the land owner).

In Minnesota & North Dakota the fur buyers are paying $40 to $50 per pelt in the raw - raw means you bring the whole animal in and they skin it.  The best months bringing money are starting late October/early November - December and January normally brings top prices and February/March it starts to drop as the fur goes down in quality but the prices are still fair like $30/$35 a pelt.

Not many people today can skin and stretch a coyote or fox correctly I guess, so the fur buyers around here request you bring the coyote to them.  I don't have a problem with that. :)

So basically it is a regional thing depending on the quality of pelts in your area.  I'm in Tennessee, so quality is probably lower here due to warm weather?

($5.00 an ear & rarely skin one).  Some ranchers just like the bodies hung over a barb wire fence.  They think it will scare other yotes away.

I give the carcasses to a local fella who skins em out and bleaches the skulls.  I reckon he needs the extra income, and i don't have the motivation to skin out a stinkin coyote.  Maybe I should ask how much he's gettin for 'em...He could be making a small fortune, and I wouldn't even know about it!

That's about right - cold climates produce quality pelts but snow can actually degrade the pelt.  In the cold climates the coyote and fox will grow thick guard hair and have a vibrant color, which makes it prime and commands a good price. When the snow comes and they lay in the snow to either sleep or wait out a blizzard the guard hair will freeze to the snow and break off, which downgrades the pelt quality.  The color will fade also but mainly with the red fox.

Right now here in Eastern North Dakota the fur buying season is coming to a close for prime pelts.  The good pelts are still bringing $60 on the carcuss but most coyotes trapped/shot right now have rubs and those pelts are only bringing $10 to $20.
