can you get a Ruger in 30-30?

I'd suggest getting both, swapping the best stock onto the one you will keep and return the other.

a 30-40Krag with a 1/16 twist would be near perfect for your parameters using cast

Is the 6.5x55 available in the RSI Mannlicher style stock? Because that's the one to get! Great post on comparing the two cartridges. Explains why I like them both so much.

I have. 336T in 30-30 and an 1894 Swedish Mauser sporter and I really love them both. But there is something so cool about those big long torpedo - like 160 gr RN in the Swede...

Also have a Krag sporter and I like the 30-40 so much I am planning on reaming a Handi 3030 to 30-40.

I have rifles in both rounds and love them.  I shoot almost no factory ammo so I never pay much attention to their ballistics tables.  Over the years I have owned and loaded ammo for over 100 different calibers and have hunted big game in 8 states.  All I can say for sure is that almost any rifle cartridge from 30-30 to 458 Win Mag will kill deer with proper bullet placement out to 200 yards or so.  I have killed Deer, Antelope, Elk, bear, caribou and moose and the result of one well placed shot no matter what caliber I used, resulted in a dead animal (and some calibers I used all the experts say are inadequate).  So pick what you like and enjoy it as it will do the job.

I have a 1A from 1976 in 7X57 which is fine caliber to me.  Do have a single shot 30-30 in a Savage 219, put a Williams Guide on the rear and a fiber optic front.  it is the nicest carry rifle I've ever come across, has taken a number of deer.  I do not try and compare them ballisticaly as booth  are capable of taking deer and have been doing so for years.

I've owned and hunted with both rounds, like them both very much and agree that within 200 yards the 30/30 is all one needs.  I don't shoot much factory ammo but the Sellier & Bellot factory loads run a 131 grain bullet at 2637fps as chronographed from the 22" barrel of my M-70 Winchester and with excellent accuracy and that does flatten trajectory to a noticable extent. I also have hand loaded the 30/30 with 130 grain Hornady spire points past 2600 fps from a 26" barrel but I normally load the 6.5 with 120 grain Noslers at more than 2900 fps. No question that past 200 yards the 6.5x55 is far superior but under 200 either one works.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

30-30 is a great truck lever gun. Ammo is plentiful at CO-OP and the farm stores.
Feed it cheap ammo and it doesn't care it just does a job.

Isn't that why they are so popular?

I have had a 30-30 Marlin and a sporterized M96 Swede in 6.5X55.  I am not guessing at velocities because I have run loads from both rifles over the Chrony.  Lloyd is right when he states the 6.5 generates higher velocities.  When hunting country that produces longer shoots the 6.5 gets the call and produces.  (Okay it no longer gets the call because I gave it to the son-in-law.)
Doubt that I will give up the Marlin until my days are up.  It fits my needs when I am hunting thicker country.

Admired the 30-04 Krag as a deer rife since I was a little tike.  One of my Dad's hunting partners bagged a lot of bucks with his using 180-grain Silvertips.  So much so that at an early age I wanted one.  A brother had a custom one for years and trade it a year ago because he never hunted with it.  A hunting partner has one he inherited years ago and has never hunted with it.  Keeps it because it belonged to favorite uncle.  He just bought a Marlin 336 in 30-30 as a truck gun.  Even in good times it is easier to get 30-30 brass then 30-40 brass.
