handi 25-06 and h4895
« on: December 26, 2012, 02:10:37 AM »
have had good success with this powder in my handi 30-30 and 270. Was wondering if anyone has tried it in the 25-06. I know its slow but was thinking of trying 115 and 120 grain bullets with it. velocities wouldnt be the highest but the 115 bt has a high bc and even at 25-2600 ft second should be  pleasent to shoot and with a bit less muzzle jump then the full house loads. anyone ever try it? Reason behind it is trying to basically duplicate 243 recoil but take advantage of the 115 grain bullet instead of 100 grain in 243. Also if any good the ballistic tip should perform well at these velocities

FWIW, the key to your bullet performance is what your game is and at what max distance for the reduced velo at impact for reliable expansion (info available from the bullet manufacturers). A lot of older/other cartridges will fall within the velo you can extrapolate and did fine; not everything HAS to be loaded full max out to do the job. Often best accuracy is under those max velo's too.

gcrank1 that is what i was looking at nosler lists the bt good to 1600- 1800 ft second. If looking at a 250 yard shot the longest the 115 bt has a bc of .453 that bullet still hold 1000 lbs energy at 300 yards and even at 2600 ft second actually is as flat as the 243 and has less recoil. that would be a fun enjoyable and deer capable load for me. Also looking at noslers site for this bullet and the 25-06 all powders they list got best resultd at the middle to low end of the loads and rite at the 26-2700 ft second. imr4064 being one of them and only a little slower than h4895. I am going to give them a try in the handi and see what happens.

Sure sounds like you are on the right track, of course, placement still remains 'everything' (ie, ya gotta put it where the critter lives), so light recoil, surgically accurate loads are mighty fine. 25 years ago I did good work with a 257Roberts so I expect you will also do well with your 25-06. If I had yours (and I have been tempted, since my 'Bob' is long gone), Id be making mid-data loads for here in Wisconsin as 200yd. would be my max range.
I dont remember who said it, but I sorta remember it," Its the bullet that does the job, the rest is just the launch platform; pick the right bullet for the game and put it where it needs to go".

4895 is a very forgiving powder and can be used in a very large range of cartridges.  It may not be the best or the fastest in all, but will work just fine and give very good accuracy in many loadings.  DP

4895 has worked great in 3 of my handi rifles. i just loaded them up starting one grain below the starting load data by hodgan for the 117 sierra. Started at 36 in .5 grain up to 40. Start load would be at 2600 max would be at 28. we will see if the handi 06 like the others like it.

I like H4895 alot and use it in .30/30 and 7.62X39... I don't shoot .25-06 but I do shoot 120 BT's with 43 grains H4895 outta my 7mm-08's and it is a very accurate, pleasant load... the previous posts might lead one to believe that using H4895 is "downloading," not so... it is actually faster than Varget in many configurations... and was definitely more accurate from my 7mm with the 120 BT.

I use H4895 in a .243 with excellent results. I used it because I had a lot of it and needed some range ammo for practice. Most modern loading books want you to use really slow burning powder to get max velocity. Look at older reloading books and you will probably find a good load. I have found H4895 to be very forgiving even in overbore cartridges.

H4895 is very versatile, I use it in my varmint loads for multiple cartridges
and also in 257 WBY pushing larger bullets at deer, no problems with
killing power at 200+ yards.

If I could have only one powder to reload for my rifles with, it would be H4895 because it can do it all.  I do like my H4350 for my 7-08 and 30-06, BUT I could do most of the same things with my H4895.  I is truly excellent in my old 30-30 Topper!  44 Man

my wifes 2506 loves 4895 w 115grn bullets.  3 shots you can cover with a dime at a 100 yards if you do your part.
