Alternative MBR's and assault STYLED rifles
« on: January 08, 2013, 09:12:59 AM »
After about 3 weeks of crusing all the gun stores I have come to the conclusion, some might need a backup plan.

MBR alternatives.  Garands are still around, and 30-06 ammo is still on the shelves.  Good bolt gun in 30-06 is also a must.  There is also the BAR and the Rem 742, 760, 7600 designed weapons.  At one time someone made 10 round mags for the Remys.

Assault Style alternatives.  Lever guns in 357/44mag/45 colt style or 30-30.  10 rounds and one can get handguns to match except for 30-30.  Also short barreled Remys and Browning autos in shorter calibers.  Also the Ruger 44 carbine (auto) would work.

Abundant ammo I've noticed still on the shelves in common calibers:  303 Brittish, 30-06, 270, 30-30, 243, 38 special, 357, 44 special, 44 mag, 45 auto hasn't ran out either as well as 40 sw which is supprising.  9mm was in short supply, especially cheaper ammo.  Magnum rifle calibers are also unaffected.

I sold a Garand several years ago, and now wish I had it, can get an abundant supply of ammo without reloading.

For someone just getting into prepping and gun acquisition, the above are suggestions since ammo supplies have been unaffected by those who waited so late to stockpile and prep.

Hah!  The lever action carbine WAS the "assault rifle" of the 19th century!

When most military rifles held five rounds, leverguns could hold a lot more. Most of the initial run of Winchester '95s were in 7.62x54R and went to the Tsar's Cossacks.  A levergun works well for left or right hand shooters, and particularly well on horseback when targets could be to either side.

An often-overlooked advantage was that many leverguns allowed the magazine to be topped off continuously.  No en-bloc clips or stripper clips needed.

The decline of the military levergun wasn't due to autoloaders - most of which were short of magazine capacity by comparison - but due to the decline of cavalry.  The lever action wasn't suited to infantry, who were expected to be able to fire while prone.

Another alternative for the 22lr is the 17HMR and/or the 22 mag.  Both are on the shelves, but 22LR is hard to find.  Don't exactly know why this is because 22lr's were cheap to begin with.

Yes the late 1800's and early 1900's rifles were developed by European powers and America to kill a horse at 200 yards.  By WWI horse calvery was obsolete.  Lots of good calibers developed then like the 7.62x54 Russian, 7 and 8mm Mausers, 303 Brittish, and the 30-06.  The 30-30 was also developed at that them.

Of course the best thing to do is to stop any and all infringements of our right to own any weapon we wish to own! But if your just now worried about your right to own a firearm your way behind the power curve!  Sucks to be you!  If the Gun grabbers have there way you'll not have any back up plan to go too! >:(

My sleeper "assault styled rifle" turned out to be my old. 49\56 french Mas in 7.5 french. This rifle came with 4 10 round mags to house the .308- like round. Quite accurate and very reliable but the imported ammo dried up for awhile. Now as I scan the internet I see 7.5x54 ammo modern made and inported, prvi makes it and its available at 14.00 per 20rd box. Less than .308.. so now I'm sittin on ammo with more just a few clicks away, for an old but reliable battle rifle. Checking out scoping options too, the mounts are out there but all sit kinda high for my tastes. Once this little dilema is solved I look forward to taking it out to 250-300 yards and seeing how it groups.  J

I don't have a problem.  I was prepared.  I posted this as a temporary alternative to those who are new to prepping for things.  Alternatives if you don't reload, or can't find any AR, AK, SKS, FAL's, or other type rifle.  Just thought some of you guys might chime in and offer some ideas for those getting started.  One is the Mosin-Nagant, even though it is a bolt gun, it is cheap and you can still find fairly cheap ammo.  Levers are great especially 357's and 44's with 10 round capability.  They also have decent side arms to go with them.

22LR is the stinker.  I have seen lots of 17HMR's and 22 mags.  So getting a rifle one of those calibers might be an idea as a substitute for the 22LR.

This is the longest I have seen ammo shortages.  Back in 2008, the 380 ammo was hard to find.  Today is is 223, as well as 308, 9mm, and 45's.  I have seen 40SW on the shelves.  I have a 9 and 45, but I do reload.  I like the new concept some makers are doing.  If you buy a 40sw, you can also buy a 9mm upper to replace the 40 and have two guns in one.

8mm mauser is another cheap caliber. back when 8mm was everywhere I bought 60,000 rounds of it for my beltfeds. I still have about 20k 8mm left. 54R is the next cheapest, but I planning on switching my 1919a4 over to that here very shortly.  don't forget the ole 12 ga/20 ga perfect for individuals not well schooled in firearms. easy to use, least expensive than many rifles, extreme accuracy not needed, fairly handy in a urban enviroment.  I am strongly considering selling my m2hb because of the ammo prices, last look was 645.00 per hundrend. really, how can you justify charging prices like that.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with bolt guns.  In fact I would more concerned with a experienced rifleman than I would with someone that owned a highpoint 9mm rifle.  And yes we must do everything we can to stop ANY AND ALL assaults against our 2nd amendment rights!

maybe if the obamanation keeps his word, like that has ever happened, and brings home 34,000 troops from the east, we will have ammunition available again at less than a dollar a round for 5.56

Seems like this past year, Homeland Security has bought more ammo than the military.

DHS also bought M4 Carbines since they were " in 5.56mm and select fire they were very well suited to personal defensive use". Funny how they are good for their personal defense but not ours.

Then, that's what we need to start calling AR's, Personal Defence Weapons.  Even in the Revolutionary war, some of our militia had better rifles, since they had rifling in their rifles, their shots were more accurate and longer range than the smoothbore Brittish muskets.  They used them for sniping by shooting Brittish officers to confuse their soldiers.  Brits complained and said it wasn't fair.

Yep, Brits are responsible for the 2nd Ammendment.  After the Boston Tea Party, the Brits sent their troops to Boston.  The required the housing of one soldier per family (also in the constitution).  They began to round up guns and ammo.  So everyone took their arms and powder to Lexington and Concord for storage outside Boston to keep the Brits from taking them.  Well, they were marching to Lexington and Concord, and the Patriots had had enough, and stopped them.  The rest is history.

We have the Freedom of Religion because of the Church of England.  Puritans had to leave because of persecution.

We have the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, because of the Brits wanting to take up weapons and ammo.

We have right to Free Speach because we can disagree with government without being branded a traitor.

We do not have to house soldiers.

We have the right to freedom of peaceful assembly.

Lots of things we rebeled against.  Seems like we might have to do it again.

I am wondering how far Obama dares to tread with his executive action tirade. Circumventing the constitution is not an option in my world. I have emailed, called, and snail mailed my opinions to every local, state, and federal official till my fingers hurt. I urge everyone to let them know we will not stand still for thier dismantling of our rights guaranteed by the constitution. It's time to be heard!

I'm kind of late to this party, but feel the need to add my two cents worth.
M1's do not thrive on typical sporting ammo. They will suffer accelerated wear and premature failures. There is a reason  various companies load "M2" or "Garand" ammo. This will seriously reduce your choices in ammo.

the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has millions of rounds of 8 rd enbloc clips in bandoleers. Every time I would shoot an M1 at our club I would pick up an extra bandoleer to take home. This is a good way too keep up your skill and build up your ammunition supply suitable for your M1 rifle.
