Need a better paper shredder
« on: February 20, 2013, 06:16:42 AM »
I need a better way to shred my documents and mail. I tried burning them, but I get too lazy about it and don't do it often enough because things are dry and the wind is blowing.

My wife tried a couple of the Walmart type shredders, and they jam up to easily and don't last.

Do you know of a reasonably priced shredder that I can run envelopes filled with junk mail through with vengeance and impunity so I can expect it to work?

Thanks!

I've had a Fellowes DM15C for several years, it works very well, never had any problems with it other than the auto paper sensor gets dusty and doesn't work, still shreds, just doesn't turn off when no paper is in the shute. I tend to accumulate mail then run a bunch at a time, 20-30 minutes worth, it runs until it gets too hot and shuts down until it cools, then works like a champ again until I finish or it gets hot again after another 15-20 minutes of shredding. The only thing I've done to it in the last 5-6yrs is add the lubricant(veggy oil) to the cutter asmbly every time the hopper is emptied.  It appears to be out of production, but they may have a current version available. The DS-1 looks worth considering from the reviews.

We had to get a new one from Office Depot at the end of 2012 and it is one that cuts the paper into confeti not strips of paper, I believe regular price was in the $89.00 area but it was on SALE or the bride would not have bought it, any how she is thrilled with it and I like the fact that you CANT put the paper together and read anything.  Jim

just get a Lab and act like you want him to leave the papers alone. Kobra , C 100 has worked for me for 4-5 years now. You do oil the cutters ? its important .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

the cheapies don't last long,
but i think a shredder is worth the cost.
if you've ever been through the
mess of id theft you won't think
twice about it. a day or more off work,
paying a parking fee to park your car,
standing in line to get a deposition,
waiting your turn to see a judge, going
back to get another document, extremely
high costs of document copies, etc.

shredders are cheap, even the expensive ones.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Thanks for the tips, guys. Good to know how they perform over time. I appreciate that. Looks like the good ones are pretty spendy, like $100 to $200. I think it's worth it though. (I tried the 12ga, but my wife says it was too loud in the house, so I can't use it anymore.)
