657 Grip Problem
« on: January 01, 2013, 10:16:44 AM »
Guys I'm having a real problem finding a set of grips to fit my 657 , I have tried 4 sets so far and none of them fit properly , so far the only thing that has been working is a set of the wrap around Pacmyers and I hate them , they pinch my hand under recoil .

Any ideas as to whats going on here ?  ???

Stimp:  Williamlayton likes Roper grips and in the past I have ordered grips made to fit a outline of my hand.  I learned from those experiences that if I make the tracing fairly tight the grips are easier to hang on to.

Since you are dealing with a S&W N frame you will most likely find most of the 'non-standard' panels (grips) may run a bit large for you.  On one of my N frames I use small or standard size grips with a Tyler T-Grip and I know there are any number of grip makers who make smaller grips for those large frame revolvers.

Which grips hae you not had success with yet?????

Thanks Mikey , maybe I should have been a bit clearer , its not the fit in my hand thats the problem , its the fit on the gun itself , for some reason the grips just don't line up properly on the grip frame .

Two makers I have had good luck with are Ahrends and the JerryMiculek's as far as fit.  If the common rubber Hogue grips fit your hand well, they make nice wood versions that seem to fit well on a couple of my N frames.

I've even tried a couple of the facrory " Cheese Grater " grips and they just don't fit right , I may have to send the gun to someone and have them custom fit a set .

Is your 657 a round butt or square butt gun?

I suggest grips from a good custom maker---I am using Keith Brown--who carries a very good reputation amongst the S&W crowd--or S&W or the folks who make the grips for S&W, I don't remember their name right off-but I can get it for you. You might drop in on the S&W forum.

It's a square grip , I've tried several grips that were " made "to fit the N frame S&W's but no luck , I'm just not sure whats going on with it , thats why I'm considering just sending the gun out to a custom grip maker .

Also , its one of Gary Reeder's custom guns , so I'm wondering if he changed the angle or shape of the grip frame somewhat .
