Scoping a Savage .222/20 ga. over and under...

A good friend of mine has a Savage O/U in .222/20ga... he asked me about putting a scope on it for better accuracy...at 65 years the open sights are not too clear...anyone have any success with this???? What scope and mount did you use...??

Your friend has a Savage 24V, I believe.  This designation came in .222/20ga, .30-30/20ga and .357/20ga varieties, to my knowledge.  MOST of them were .222/20ga.   I've never owned any "V"s, but I do own two 24-JDL's currently.

First answer: IF that gun is drill & tap'd through the top (which I believe it is), then Weaver #74 is the correct mount.  Any Weaver style rings will then fit.

Second answer:  IF that gun has a 3/8's dovetail groove on top instead, then you have several options, as I recently outlined on another thread in this forum. 

If your friend is dead set on a scope, then my suggestion would be to go to BKL Technologies and buy their BKL-260 MB one-piece scope mount ($55).  Then top with favorite scope.  This mount is unique in how strong it holds...MANY lesser mounts simply will not hold onto that groove under shotgun recoil...hence the quaint message imprinted onto the barrel.

There are others out there that are "ok," but this is the best one I've found to date, and one of my guns wears one (see other thread pot for pics).

IF your friend is still open to the idea of irons, there are aperture style iron options that are WORLDS better than those near-worthless open sights the gun came with.  See the other thread for details.

For my money, I'll take my Model 24 with a great peep sight any day over the scope.  A light small game gun doesn't need the magnification, the bulk, or the slower acquisition time a scope provides, IMO.

I have the clone to what you want, mine is a 30-30 over 20 gauge.  I use a Swift 1.5 to 4.5 in Burris ultra low Z Rings on a Weaver base.  The ultra low rings are discontinued now, but can be found.  It is a very good setup, does every thing you want it to do for hunting.  Larry

Great info if I ever decide to scope mine.  However I like the iron sights just fine.  It is not a daily shooter anyway.

I haven't had mine out for a while and I put the scope I had on it on another rifle.  I still have the mounts on it and might use a low power shotgun scope that might allow me to use either barrel.
I'd also like to find a factory stock for mine as the one that is on the gun is cracked.  It would be nice to find either a composite scope or maybe wood that I could finish.  I don't find the compsite stocks pretty, but they sure are practical.
I think mine would be good for Ohio coyotes.

I just bought a 24V .357/20 that came with see through rings and a Bushnell Sportview 4x32.  My old eyes need the scope.  At first I didn't like the setup with the scope that high.  Then I found I could see thru the rings well enough to use the shotgun quickly.  I think, for now, I'm leaving the scope the way it is.  It's down at a friend's in Texas being cut to 18.5 inches, reamed to .357 Maximum, threaded for choke tubes and fitted with a gold bead front shotgun sight.  I guess I'll find out if it works.

I own a .223 over 20, and a .22 Mag over 20.  The .223 is drilled and tapped, it already had a scope mounted when I bought it.  The .22 Mag has the dovetail, and a warning, "Do not shoot the shotgun with scope attached".  This warning is stamped on the barrel.  I really like the .223/20ga.  Don't know why I bought the .22 Mag/20 ga.

 Sour I know why you bought the 22 mag/20ga.... Could there be any better combo rifle for bunny busting?  ;)

 My Father in law had the 223/20 ( I think it was the 20ga anyway), it was already wearing a 3-9x40 . Never had any trouble with accuracy or scope / no scope troubles. Think he was bummed out to find the twist rate was aimed at light wt. projectiles and was not to be a good deer hunting combo gun as he was wanting it to be ( he only deer hunts and will not head shot a deer ).

 Have always wanted one of these in the 30-30/12ga configuration.
