What's the best method and/or tools for a trim job on a 12 ga. single shot barrel? Want to get it behind the choking.

shortening shotgun barrel

Use a new, fine-cut high speed hacksaw blade to cut to length.

Use a new fine-cut mill file to square the end and de-burr.

Use a try-square to check muzzle swuqareness to barrel.

BE sure that the barrel meets minimum barrel length requirements before you cut:  18" muzzle-to-breech face, and minimum 26" overall length.

I have done this several times with a small, new pipe cutter. (About 7 bucks at Walmart.) It cuts dead square. Deburr with the pipe burr that is built into the tool and use sandpaper by hand or on a tapered dowel to smooth up.

I'd make it at least 18 1/4" from the muzzle to the bolt face to avoid any technicalities.

Bigjohn or any one when you say measured from the bolt face what do you mean? Let me give you an example to see if I understand right. I have an old Model 11 Remmington auto loader that I have cut off it had a very long full choke barrel on it 32" and I found a used improved barrel that I would rather use for birds. anyway I wanted to cut the full choke off and try a project for a short range deer gun 40-50 yrds and shoot forster style rifled slugs now do I measure from where the barrel comes out of the reciever or from where the bolt when fully forward is? also do you think the auto action will be effected by the shorter barrel? You need to measure from where the action closes on the head of the shell.
