This is not over yet. not by a long shot. cuomo slammed this through solely as a means to get the jump on obama so that when 2016 comes up he, cuomo, will look like the most progressive dem there is, which would set him up for the white house. However, I think this might yet go to court and be enjoined or at least (hopefully) sent back to the rules committee for further review. One real question is why, if cuomo was/is insuch a rush to ban this and that, he gave us a year to comply.
There is a petition put up on line by state Senator Kathy Marchione, to repeal and revise the law, that has gathered 1,300 signatures per hour - she is close to 40,000 signature now and the number is climbing. Some of our local politicians are livid at the governor for this and I doubt they will let it rest. While the cuomo-ites say there were votes for the law from both sides of the isle, it appears there was a significant upstate/nyc split, which figures.....
The information seen in the papers is quite misleading and one does not know what to believe, esp the newspapers - will there be 'grandfathering'? What about registration - in ny, all pistols must be registered but not yet rifles or shotguns except by this law. The 7 round magazine limitation - some say sell them or lose them, other say the law says you can have them just not with more than 7 rounds in them. There is still a question as to whether something owned legally previously can be outlawed at the expense of the holder or owner. The NRA has yet to become involved except by opinion and I think they are in contact with Sen Marchione regarding her petition; if there are enough signatures I think the NRA may assist with legal action, which could help tremendously.
Yes, I think the next election will be very interesting. It is noted that every gun ban voting dem has usually found themselves out of a job in the next election and it should be interesting to see how it plays out here.
There is a rally scheduled for Albany on the 19th at noon on the steps of the capitol, but it may be a bit of a set-up. It was scheduled before the law was passed, possibly as a means to protest the possibility of it being signed, and one poster to the site announcing the rally has called upon all ccw holders to carry their sidearms openly, which is a very bad mistake. This may well be illegal - in the first place, your ccw requires you to carry concealed, not openly; and in the 2nd place, the City of Albany has a code that prohibits the carrying of a concealed weapon within the city limits unless approved by the (Albany) chief of police; when you consider that both the state troopers who will be guarding the doors of the capitol building and the albany cops who will be cruising the crowd will be looking for someone to step on and make this rally into a fiasco for the anti-gun-ban crowd, carrying a concealed weapon to this rally is a very bad idea.
