Beeman R7 vs R9

Really trying to decide between these 2 air rifles for some time now. Currenlty own an old Weihrauch HW30 which is similar to the R7. The HW30 needs to be repaired so I thought I would buy a second air rifle - could use the new one as a scoped rifle and once the HW30 is repaired it could be my open sight rifle. The R7 would still have the same feel more of less as the HW30 along with an adjustable trigger and is rated at higher accuracy according to the Beeman catalog.

The R7 is appealing as well. Somewhat larger rifle - the HW30 and R7 seem a little undersized. But they are easy for me to shoot offhand. The R9 has much more cocking effort 40lbs as compared to 18 for the R7. The R9 also has more power as well. The R7 is rated as being more accurate.

The main use of the rifle will be indoor target shooting at 50 ft. When the weather warms up perhaps some 25 yard outdoor target use.

Any ideas on which might serve me better? Anyone own one or both of these? Any suggestions appreciated.

Hey TC,

I have an R9.  I use it mainly for targets out to 25 yards, but the reason I chose it over the R7 was that I also want to be able to hunt rabbits with it too.  It should be powerful enough to take rabbits out to 30 yards, which is about as far as i would shoot at them anyways.

The R7 is better if you are only going to shoot targets.   I think its supposed to be more accurate too.  Now if you thought you might want to try Field Target competition, then definitley get the R9, because they shoot out to 50 yards.  Thats a little too far for the R7.

Below are a couple of links for internet postal airgun matches.  You print a target off on your printer, shoot it in your basement over the week, and post your score.  They also like what kind of rifles, pellets and scopes they use.  

Its a lot of fun, you should try it.

there is not really that much difference between the HW30

and the R7 to make much difference so for what you want to do target shoot go with that. You could even save some serious cash and buy either another HW30 of the HW35s (which is the R7 with out the beeman name and more importantly the Beeman price) It also has a nicely adjustable trigger too. great gun.  Personally Unless you must have a Beeman gun I would buy the HW35S.

Rob,
Since you have an HW-30(practically an R-7 without a Rekord trigger) why don't you get the R-9?  You or I will never be able to tell any accuracy diffeence between an R-7 or an R-9.  The R-9 is SLIGHTLY more diffacult to master, but with a little practice, no problem.   Don't let the 40lb cocking effort scare you off.  Really nothing to it for an average adult. If outdoor hunting/pest control/shooting is your thing, the R-9 is your gun.

You DO mention the main use will be 50ft indoor target practice.  If this REALLY is the main use for your air rifle, there's really no reason to not get the R-7.  That's EXACTLY what it is design to do.  

I have several R-7s and R-9 so I think EVERYONE should have a couple of each!

HW35S is an R7 without the BEEman price. Get a HW gun(and use the money saved for a good scope, if you deside to do so.

ABSOLUTELY incorrect.  I HAVE an HW-35 right here.  I ALSO have three R-7s.  The HW-35/R-6 are SIMILAR but the R-6 is closer to an HW-99S.  The Weirauch HW-30S is the closest relative to the R-7.

Thanks to all those who responded! I tried to order the R7 from one source yesterday - D&R - and they were out of stock. The price was the best I have seen at $231. I may find another source even though I will have to pay more. Gives me time to reconsider the R9. Whatever I decide to buy I can easily see another air gun im my future!

I'm pretty sure you'll love that R7. I sure enjoy mine - even took 2 grouse with it this fall at very close ranges.  But for paper its so accurate its fun.   Whelen was right.

I have owned both and I think you'll be happy with the R7 for your stated use.  I have an older model fitted with a 2x7 scope.  What it gives up in power to the R9 is offset by its lighter weight and much better handling qualities.
