« on: February 14, 2013, 05:34:38 AM »
I have an Encore 12 Ga. shotgun barrel that I would like to use for deer..It is smoothbore....Should I use slugs, sabots or maybe buckshot....Also, what chokes would be appropriate...I want to be safe....Thanks

Well first off you need to check your state reg. to see what is legal, next you need to see what choke you have as I think you would need cyl. choke to shoot slugs with a smooth bore. I think your rifle type slugs would work best.

An improved cylinder choke has worked best with 1 oz Foster style slugs for me.  you can get rifled choke tubes to shoot the Sabot type slugs.  I have never tried a rifled choke tube through .

Depending upon where you are hunting, do not discount buckshot.  Pattern Master choke tubes work wonders.  I use OO in three inch magnum in my smooth bore deer barrel in my 870.  This combo is deadly out to 50 yards.  Probably, even works at a greater distance, but I limit my range to 50 yards with buckshot.  Great for thickets.   No reason a Thompson would not work just as well.  Of course, it is going to thump you pretty good, too.
