Looking at the 2012-2013 Success sticky
« on: January 25, 2013, 06:39:39 PM »
Looking at the CF numbers.  I'm not surprised by the 45-70 number, lots of big bore lovers here.  Not surprised by the 357 Maxi and 44 Mag, I'm guessing a lot of that is Indiana and our goofy deer hunting regs.  The 30-30 numbers surprises me, looks really low.  The 243 number really surprises me.  The 243 = 16, all the other children of the 30.06 (including the 30.06) = 11 14 .  The 243 is more popular than all the other children of the 30-06 combined?  I didn't expect that.

Edit: Forgot the 35 Whelen.

i think alot of the younger hunters  were using the 243 which would give it a higher count as this appears to be what alot of youngsters start out on. I too was surprised by the drop in the 30-30 numbers as they seem to be popular. what i did like seeing is the oddball or un-manufactured custom calibers. It shows that the handi lovers are generally folks with brains , intuition and ingenuity and sometimes down right clever. Even more amazing is that these folks dont try to hoard all the info and will freely spread it for those that ask and thats why i love this sight.
If the women don't find ya handsome, they should atleast find ya handi

I'd say the .243 is the grandchild of the .30-06 since obviously the military/civilian developers of the .308 started with a .30-06 case and then shortened it.

The 30/30 has gotten a bad rap over the last few years , it seems that its just way too old & slow to kill deer anymore , we all know that you need a 300 Win Mag or bigger to drop 150 lb White Tails these days , and if the state boys here in Ohio would ever get their act together all I'd use is a 30/30 , I love that round .
