Taylor & Robins
« on: December 15, 2009, 01:39:52 AM »
Has anyone ever heard of these two? They ran a gun shop just outside of Eldred PA. Taylors speciality was building 257 Roberts.  I think his son in law. Don Robins did the stock work. I stopped there over 40 years ago to see if i could order a Roberts. Robins told me Taylor had slowed down and wasn't doing much work anymore. Said he had enough orders to last him 3 years and wasn't taking anymore. My Grandfather was born and raised in Eldred. He did a lot of shooting with Taylor. The two of them were banned from the local turkey shoots. When they showed up there was no doubt who was going home with the turkey. Kind of a stupid question i guess. Old Gramps would be 106 years old. So i am going back a lot of years. Just wondering if anyone has seen any of Taylors work?

Ran across this old post today, though it worth a reply.
I've had three T&R Side lever safties for Mauser 98's from them over the years starting in the late 60's. I still have one. Sent them the bolt shroud and cocking piece, they returned the completed saftey finished and blued. They fit well with no work needed;workmanship was excellant. The last one was done 16 years ago,so I don't know if they are still in business,if so I would not hesitate to have further work done by them!

 Best wishes,
 Waddie Bill

Kind of interesting to know someone else has heard of them. I don't know if the place is still there or not. I haven't  gone to Eldred in years. No reason to anymore. All the family i had there are now deceased. Sure would have liked a Roberts for him though.

;)  bobg, when I was young, a long time ago, probably in the late 60's or early 70's I was in the T & R shop...Visited with one of those two and now I could never tell you which one....they made some beautiful rifles though...we visited about calibers..while the Roberts information is no doubt very true...I am certain they also had a short 7mm Mag. wildcat called of course the 7mm Taylor and Robins...As I remember it was about like the Rem. mag...Warren Page gave the caliber some play in one of his articles, and if I look around, I may still have the article cut out and in a file..we visited about that caliber, and writers...of course Elmer was not their man, they liked Page and said he PAID for his rifles...while the other well known writer of the period had written several times asking for a free rifle and he would give them so much space in his popular column..At this date that is about all I remember of the visit ...Nice to turn back those pages in life...

Precision Shooting magazine did some articles some years back. Be darned if I can remember which issues. Perhaps a phone call to them would get you copies. 1-860-645-8776. Just took the number from the latest issue. Frank

I'm from Eldred Pa... I hadn't heard of the Taylor & Robins rifle shop until a few days ago and when i did some research came across this article.... I'm sorry to say the shop is no longer in use, but the building still stands... Don't know much more about these legendary rifles so if anyone could pass on a link or some knowledge of them it would be greatly appreciated. thank you
