reloading 357mag

Has anyone tried the hornaday leverevolution 140 gr in their 357mag H&R? What load did you use? Thinking of tring some so any help would be nice.  Thanks  James in Arkansas

I've not shot the Hornady 140s because my Handi's seem to like the heavier slugs , one will not shoot anything under 158g and another loves the 180g rifle bullets . I'm not sure if its just the travel time of the longer barrel or what , but lighter bullets just seem to pattern more than group .

That maybe the reason I can not get mine to group. I have some 158 jackets with win 296 that I have not tried yet. I tried 158 cast in 38 brass with 3gr of bullseye that shot fair. I loaded them for my pistols to play with. I also shot some 95gr cast with 3gr of bullseye that shot fair. That is a fun load in the pistols for my wife. I will have to buy heavy bullets as I do not have molds for them. Would like to have a good load for deer hunting to 75yds.  James in Arkansas

tried the factory loaded l/r because
i couldn't find the component bullets
at the time. (please don't tell anyone
that i bought ammo!)
they did ok at 50 but just ok and not
good at 100.
i like cast 158 and jsp 158 better and
they group better.
the jury is still out on the barnes. i think
it's because of the powder i use.

Not Hornadys, but I use 140 gr Rem HP's, I use 14 gr of 2400. I get about 1 1/8 groups @ 75 yards which is what I sight in for with that gun. No chrony, but think it si about 1650/1700 fps. My grandson killed 3 deer so far with it at 35-65 yards.

Like Stimpy, my .357 Handis never liked lighter bullets.  They're both Maxis, but I load 158 gr. XTPs for the mags and 180 gr. Hornady SSPs for the Maxi.  They shoot MOA if I do my part.  I shoot the lighter ones in .38s, but they're just for plinking and I'm not up tight about accuracy.

I didn't get to experiment with my Handi 357 Maxi as much as I hoped to before I had finalize it with 180 SSPB's for deer season.  What I did experiment with mine would shoot 125 XTP 357 Mags very well, about an inch at 50yds.  Put the same bullet in a 38 Spl and it patterned.  The next combo I'm going to try are 158grs platted in the 38 spl.  I'm thinking I'll start midway and move to max with a couple different powders.

I just realized I'm not sure if I saved the recipe for the 125 XTPs in the Mag. :(
