Range Day
« on: February 03, 2013, 10:18:24 AM »
Hey folks... spent a few hours at the range today fired a couple hundred rounds with my Ultra shorty rifles in .223, .243, .30/30 and 7.62X39... Started with the .223 at 200 meters and fired one ten shot group to check zero, then fired the ten shot group pictured below, I didn't put the calipers on it but it would be under MOA, there are five in the 1" bull (two through one hole). I was shooting bulk Hornady 55 grain Z-Max with 27 grains of CFE-223 in Win brass. That was good enough. Moved on to the .243, and was testing it with a long range load for yotes; 58 grain Z-Max using 43 grains of H4895... 3700 fps out of the braked 18" barrel and grouped right around 3" at 200 meters. Moved on to the .30/30, using Nosler 150 BT's with 34 grains of H4895 in Win brass... was very pleased with almost 2600 fps out of the braked 18" barrel... it grouped right around MOA with virtually no fliers in 50 rounds. The 7.62X39 was a real sweetheart with Hornady 123 SST's and 29 grains of H322 for 2450 fps... I only fired this one at 100 meters but after ten 10-shot groups, it was clear that it was a shooter. The .30/30 and 7.62X39 share the same frame, so I switched the barrels back and forth a few times while shooting them and experienced ZERO shift in POI using the tensioned QD knob. All in all a very good day with the Handi rifles... changed a few minds at the range about the potential of Handi rifles and had quite a few comments on the good looks and compact handling... one young fella kept coming back to my rack of rifles, so I let him shoot twenty rounds from the .223... he outshot his own Savage .223 with the Handi... and shocked his father at the next station.

Good shooting! Went to the range myself, had it all to myself. I took the 45-70, firdt time since I hacked the barrel to 24", put it in a laminate stockset and mounted a simmons pro diamond to it. 30 rounds of 50 grains of rl7 with hornady 350 grain round noses has left me with one sore shoulder....

Where were you shooting?  We had -13F at 9 a.m. yesterday and +1 this morning. :o :o :o   I know you Canadians are tough, but you guys musta had your fur lined knickers on.  Have you got a 200 yard indoor range over there?  Nice shooting and very nice to see the Handis working.

Pete

Pete... it was -20 Celcius today, but we have an insulated shooting shack and a woodstove... we shot at 100 and 200 meters... no way I was walking in that three feet of snow... so we brought the snowmachine and broke trail with that and made the long run to check groups and put out targets... four double rifle cases, four range boxes, shooting bags, range bag, targets, camera, trailer and machine etc... I was tired before we got on the road! It was good to spend time with my son, who gave his K-Hornet a good work-out... I will say the 7.62 Soviet was a pure joy to shoot... I have about 500 rounds through it now, love it every time!
