30-30 frame

Howdy all,
Quick question I think I probably know the answer to. I am wanting a 30-30 and I saw a post from a search that said even though H&R would not fit a 30-30 barrel to a SB1 frame it was still safe to put it on a SB1? Is that a true statement? If it was that would be Handi(couldn't resist) as I already have a 44 mag on a SB1.

While it's not recommended, it's certainly been done before. There's an old topic I read about that on here and I believe the basic advice was if you already have one, to start with light loads and work up slowly. The 44 mag max pressure is 36000 psi, and the 30-30s is 42000.  The sb1 frame isn't quite as strong as the sb2. Of course if you had to get it either way you'd probably be better off getting a different one on the sb2 frame, and it never hurts to have multiple frames if you've got multiple barrels... But "just" as a hypothetical, it "can" be done

Max pressure is only half of the equation, the other half is case head area. Those two determine the amount of breech thrust that the receiver sees. The 30-30 has a higher max pressure but a smaller case head than a 44 magnum.

Do the math yourself and use the 44 Mag as a reference since H&R will fit those to an SB1.

Here's a recipe for you straight out of Spanky's Handi cookbook...
Take one SB1 frame, a nice set of stocks and one 30-30 barrel, add them together with a pinch of brass, primer, gunpowder and lead, close tightly, pull the trigger and enjoy. ;)  30-30 Toppers have been around forever and they're the old cast iron frame... if it worked then it'll work now.

Ah sweet!! Now all I got to do is find some awesome person to sell me a barrel! Anyone....Anyone! Spanky you have a good hand load in your Handi cookbook for deer and hogs that a lady like my wife and a 12 year old boy might get along with?

Tell you the truth I mostly shoot 150gr. Core Lokt's in my 30-30's... I've messed around a bit with handloads for it but can't seem to do any better than the factory ammo.
We don't have hogs here in upstate NY but I've knocked the stuffing out of alot of deer with the Core Lokt's too.

Tzimm, my favorite 30-30 load is a 125 grain sierra hp fn. Max book charge of reloader 7 (30 grains). Light bullets lighter recoil. This is in a marlin so you could experiment with spitzers.
