Grips for Blackhawk?
« on: February 04, 2013, 08:18:41 AM »
>_<

I'm new to the forums, so I thought i'd start out with a question for something i've been trying to figure out.

I got a blackhawk a few months ago, a nice 50th anniversary edition. Shoots great, love the caliber, but the grips are like sandpaper, and i'm not a fan of the look. So i'm in the process of making a decent looking set of grips from walnut, but i'd also like some monogrips for it. I don't have overly large hands but the monogrips fit perfectly for me on the guns i've tried. The problem is the odd sized grip frame and the fact that I haven't found but maybe a handful of grips for this gun, and all standard sized ones at that. I know the frame is supposed to be the same size as the old model blackhawks, so my question is, are there ANY oversized rubber grips out there that will fit it? I'm not opposed to doing some modifying and fitting to make them work, but the more I research the subject the more I get confused, and I'm just curious if there's something close enough that i can make work.

Thanks for any help!

I believe both Paychmeyer and Hogue both make grips for the old style frame.  I have a 50th model flat top in .44 mag., and yea, the plastic grips do not do it justice.  I re-stocked in maple...

That's a pretty gun there  :D

This is the one i was looking at/able to find on midway:

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/781093/hogue-monogrip-grips-ruger-blackhawk-single-six-rubber-black

Hogue's store has that listed for the new blackhawk, old army, vaquero and new single six. The other subsection they have for flattop blackhawks and new vaqueros(which i understand the anniversary grip frame to be) only has standard size wood grips. Just wondering if they were close enough that it could be made to fit

I don't think it's even legal to put rubber grips on a Blackhawk.... :)

I know I know...They're just so comfortable. If they're not those factory hard rubber things anyway.

I guess i'd be more accepting of an oversized wooden grip, and I plan on making a pair in the future, but the current grip is just so tiny, it looks weird to me, I know single actions have smaller grips anyway but that grip is uncharacteristically small on the 44 frame. And I'd like to be able to get a good solid hold on it when i'm shooting hot loads. Monogrips are a cheap stopgap option for now

That's a really nice holster and belt there flintlock, what kind of wood is that?

Now we are getting somewhere...This guy makes grips and he sizes them differently than those cheese graters that Ruger puts on them...This makes them easier to control...The recoil isn't bad...

I did a little searching, and grips for that frame do seem to be lacking (over sized grips, that is)  Your particular grip frame is called the XR-3 model.  I believe it was used on most pre-1963 guns, as well as the new flat tops.  There are a number of custom makers who could make you grips to fit that are longer or thicker that might better handle recoil for you.  Here is a link to a web site that has a ton of info on Ruger S/A's

That's quite a comprehensive site there, thanks! So I guess now my main question is, if comparing the size of the xr3 and xr3 red frames, just how hard would it be to modify an oversized grip for the xr3 red to fit the xr3? Cause I don't really want to pay for a good custom grip at the moment, though I would like that in the future

I bought them off ebay 4 or 5 years ago.  Don't remember who was selling them.  They are spalted maple, and have held up well.  A little thicker then stock, which I like on hard kicking guns.

Monogrips on a Blackhawk?   YUCK!!!   They deserve better if not left standard factory.  Anything but rubber/plastic... wood, stag, ivory, etc. IMO    ;) :)

Basic, but this may help.......

Early production Old Model Ruger Single-Sixes and Blackhawks ('53 to m id '62) were fitted with the XR-3 grip frame which emulates the Colt SAA grip.

Late production Old Model Ruger Single-Sixes and Blackhawks (mid '62 up into early 1973) were fitted with the XR3-RED grip frames.  They are actually "truncated" Super Blackhawk grips.

A redesigned XR3-RED size 1972/1973 was carried over to the New Models  to allow for new transfer bar/trigger spring.

In 2005 the XR-3 style was reintroduced but the grip dowel was slightly relocated due to the the new internal safety lock mechanism...so the '53-mid '62 grips won't fit w/o drilling new holes. The 50th Anniversary BH 357MAG (2005) and 44MAG (2006) would use the reintroduced XR-3 grips most likely (also New Varquero (2004).

There are other variations... this is just some basics I jotted down and saved way back when.

I have a very similar set to Flintlocks from Privatescustomgrips.com and they were not all that much more than rubber grips and way less than most custom wood. He is a real gentleman to work with and the grips fit perfectly on my 50th 357. They are thicker in the right places than the factory and improved the feel to fantastic.
IMHO that revolver deserves better than Ugh....spit....grinch.....recycled car tires.

Well, i agree wood grips definitely look better. But i would still like a pair of oversize grips, don't care if they're finger grooved or not. Does he do those?

Sorry, i guess i didn't clarify. It's a 44 mag, which is why i want something i can get a firmer hold on. Stock frame is a little small, and those skinny hard plastic grips are horrible to me. I find the recoil itself comfortable with one hand or two, it's just the rolling i don't like. And i've got a rather long thumb so rolling it back for that doesn't do me much good

Mine is a .44 as well...It's going to roll with full house loads...I just let it...With the rubber grips I would shoot three shots and my skin was being grated off...The different grips make a big difference but the plow handle grips simply weren't made for the recoil of a .44 mag...

I guess so. I might feel differently about it with a good set of wood grips. Those aren't too hard too find
