Are sources getting scarce for Black Powder?
« on: January 21, 2013, 08:42:57 PM »
Just wondering...I have had a few black powder muzzle loaders tell me recently that their usual sources for black powder are saying none in stock right now. Same for Model Rocket shooters ...anybody else having this problem? My source still has supplies on hand... BoomLover

I generally prefer Pyrodex to black for my muzzleloaders, but still like black for pan priming.  I have though, noticed less and less shops are carrying real black powder.  I am not up on the regulations, but I think it might have to do with the govt. requiring different handling / storage procedures for black as compared to black substitutes.

i would consider stocking up, i did a awhile back.  even our local gun store that is known for stocking muzzelloading supplies was out last time i checked and they said they didnt know when they could get any either. there are sources online you can order from. you will pay a hazmat fee but its really not that much if you order say 25lbs or so.you can still get powder much cheaper that way than the high priced black powder subs purchased locally.

There may be a problem with some local shops selling blackpowder as the cost of meeting the requirements may be more than the actual sales add up to, what with folks thinking they're better off with the fake stuff.
There is also a shortage of Goex powders at the moment as there's been a rash of explosions in the last couple of years at the plant, that have really messed with the availability of civilian/sporting grade powder.
There's no place I know of within a 100 miles for me to get blackpowder, so I order from Powder Inc, Grafs and sometimes Bear River Powder. In addition Track of the Wolf, Maine Powde House, Buffalo Arms and Upper Missouri trading co, and Coonies sell black by "mail order".
Also Powder Inc , Grafs and Buffalo Arms will ship in as little as 5 lb lots. And Powder Inc's prices are delivered .

There may also be some spill over from the panic buying that is going on in other areas of the shooting sport.... some people may believe that they need to stock up "Just in case" putting stress on whats available.....

Yes Jerry's prices are very hard to beat, especially when buying in full case lots. Heck of a nice guy as well.

We generally go thru 1 case a year, sometimes 2.  Keeping primers around is harder than the powder..

You will find these distrubutors as well as others  list in the cannon link list in the stickies at the top of the board.  A good resource to find a powder is to look to the GEOX wesite and look at there list of distributors.

I bought some and tried using for blanks, did not work well, had lots of unburned grains raining down.  What kind of cannon did you use it in, and did you test to see how much unburned shot out?  If a lot isn't going to burn it would be hard to get consistent IV's and accuracy, I'd think.  Maybe if I'd mixed in some FF or FFF it'd light up the big, lumpy 2FA more quickly.  If I knew I was getting it all to burn I'd use it for sure in larger-longer bore cannons.

The You-Tube data on this video, as I recall, mentions Ukraine as source.  I can see that, this was probably done at a mine or well where there's be enough drums and inebriated workers to pull this off.

In response to Canonmn's question, I use it in a GB cannon, a Bowling Ball Mortar and it works great.
